Modern Mongolia a Concise History

This book is his most significant contribution to a better understanding of Mongolia in the world. The book traces the whole fascinating history of the twenty's century Mongolia beginning from 1911 when the independence of theocratic Mongolia was proclaimed and closing the events by July 1996 elections which put an end to the almost 75-year unbroken rule of the communists in this country of vast territory (1,566,500sq.km) and just 2.4 million people.

Two political figures mostly dominated the period from the mid 1930s to 1984 as leaders of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party. Choibalsan (born 1895) developed a Soviet-style economy and destroyed theocratic power through political and religious purges; remaining in power until his death in 1952. Tsedenbal's (born 1916) period of tenure was marked by increasingly close integration with the USSR and at the same time with rapid industrialization of livestock economy and urbanization of nomadic people.

With old regime's collapse, beginning in 1989, Mongolia was able to break its economic and political dependence on the Soviet Union. In 1990, the first free elections were held; Mongols elected their first president P.Ochirbat and a new parliament. The new Constitution was adopted in February 1992 and the country's name was changed from the Mongolian People's Republic to Mongolia.
