Sarzameen-e-Hyderabad
Hyderabad was founded by Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah of Golconda in 1591, It was built on the Southern bank of the river Musi.According to a legend, Sultanbuilt it for the love of the beautiful Bhagamati whom he later titiled "Hyder Mahal". The city was then named Bhagnagar after her. Some historians say that it was renamed as
Hyderabad after Hyder-e-Karrar(ra) i.e. Hazrat Ali(ra),the fourth Calif of Islam.
The city fell in 1687, to the emperor Aurangzeb, a defeat, which marked the end of Qutub- Shahi dynasty. After Aurangzeb's death in1707, his viceroy in
Hyderabad, Asaf Jah, declared independence. He founded the Asaf Jahi dynasty, which spanned seven generations and included some of the richest men in the
world. The Asaf Jahi Nizams ruled till 1948, when the state was merged with the Indian Union.
Mir Momin was the chief architect of this great city. With his vast experience in construction of many cities he outlined designed the
blueprint for the construction of this city. He was the Prime minister of Mohd. Quli Qutub Shah. With his efficiency as a scholar and theologist
laid foundation for the success of Quli Qutub Shah
Charminar, the edifice of the four minarets, is the legendary masterpiece of the Qutub Shahis. The awasome rectangular structure was built upon four grand arches by Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah in 1590 - 1591. But the Significance and relevance of charminar is a subject of endless debate.
There are a lot of theories about the significance of charminar , whatever be the truth , Charminar today is synonymous with hyderabad's old-world
charm and beauty and connotes Qutub Shahi grandeur to tourists with its
spiral stairways. It is the representative of Hyderabad's Magnificient History and is a mark of the citys colour as whole. The monument which was built as the center of the Garden of Paradise which was the scheme of the city at its inception, has withstood four hundred summers and has seen the sun set over various dynasties has been what one may call the witness to Hyderabad from its birth.

The Mecca Masjid is the biggest mosque in Hyderabad and lies 100 yards south west of Charminar. The name is derived from the Grand Mosque at Mecca on which it is patterned. The hall is 67 metres by 54
metres and 23 metres high. The roof is wupported by 15 arches, five on each of the three sides. The building of the Mecca Masjid was begun by Sultan Muhammad Qutb Shah under the direction of Daroga Mir Faizullah Baig and Choudhary Rangaiah. Nearly 8000 mansons and labouresrs worked on it. The
construction work continued during the reigns of Abdullah Qutb Shah and
Abul Hasan Tana Shah. Finally 77 uears after it was begun, Mecca Masjid
was completed in 1694 by the then Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.
There is an interesting story regarding this mosque. When the foundation
was being laid, Sultan Muhammad Qutb Shah is said to have invited all the
pious religious elders of the city. It was announced that the king wanted
the foundation stone to be laid by onewho had never missed his prayers.
none came forward, therefore Sultan Muhammad himself laid the
foundation for he had never missed even his midnight prayer since the age
of 12. |

The beginnings of Osmania University can be
traced way back to 1873, when the need for a university in Hyderabad with
an Indian language as the medium of instruction was first mooted. Two
eminent scholars, Rafat Yar Jung and Jamaluddin Afghani, were the active
inintiators of this move. In 1913, an old boys'association of Dar-ul-Uloom was formed, and this association raised the issue of starting a university. By this time, the
seventh Nizam had succeeded to the throne. He took a keen interestin the
proposal. During thefirst meeting of the association in 1914, which was
held in the Town Hall situated in the Public Gardens, Sir Akbar Hydri, after
due consultation with the Nizam, in his inaugural speech assured the
gathering of the setting up of a university. He submitted detailed proposals
to the Nizam in 1917. The Nizam gave his consent and suggested the
name "Osmaina University".
