News from Gunnison: dated 2/26/2001
"Hello Family, Last Friday, we travelled to Palisade, CO to watch NOEL and his team compete in the District play-offs. ... Thursday night, here in Gunnison, the Cowboys beat Basalt, placing them against Aspen on Friday. Out of 11 teams, Gunnison placed 4th in the district at this time. ... Aspen was in first place, undefeated as of Friday ... Our boys played hard and well, were behind by 6 at the beginning of the 4th quarter, pulled ahead & won the game with an 11 point lead!! Score: 50-39. ... We spend the night and did the mall and Red Lobster for lunch with QUINN. Then, we watched the girls play Aspen and win! ... taking 3rd overall. They are an incredible team and we're so proud. ... Later, our boys played Eagle Valley in the championship game. Both teams played so well; the competition was evenly matched which made for a fun time. At the half, we were tied at 21 all.; Gunnison pulled out a win by only 3 points at the end: 54-51!!! ... We took 1st place!!! Players and fans alike were elated, astounded and thrille!!! It was so exciting. ... Friday, March 2nd, Gunnison will host a regional game which will determine whether or not we advance to the State Play-offs. ... We're so proud to have taken first in the district. Over the past few months, we have witnessed our teams improve dramatically. They have matured in a way that one sees as they play. Both the girls and boys have displayed what it means to play as a team; working together to make the points. The set-ups and defensive strategies continued to improve overall. They depend on each other to play the game well. That has been the best part. ... Hey, just passing on one of the highlights in our lives lately. We'll keep you posted. ... Love, Katy"
So like Katy, she humbly neglected to tell us how many points were scored by the star played, her oldest son, NOEL.
TIMMY has made a job change, relocating to Las Vegas. We all wish him well in his new venture, and those of us already in Las Vegas as soooo happy to have him join us.
AMANDA has returned home from New Mexico. At 16, it appears as though the military was not quite ready for our fun-loving cousin yet.
GERI tells us that the WACO Charity Ball, which she produces annually, 2/24, was the biggest and best one yet. She said she's going to treat herself to a long deserved nap to celebrate it's success.
QUINN has decided to close his Guinea Pig Frenzy Website. We will retire it to our Archives at the end of this month as well. We all enjoyed his enthusiasm, and will look forward to his Spacecamp site to flourish.
Patrick - 37 on the 9th
PATRICK's 30-somethingthth birthday was quite eventful. Being the "babe" of the 3rd generation and almost the last to have not yet reached 40 (Tommy has a few more months yet),, his "bride" received an automobile so they are no longer a one-car family. PATRICK tells us he is excited about MATTHEW coming for a prolonged USA stay beginning in June.
NOEL has left for his trip to Germany, which Katy told us was in the plans in their Christmas message, He departed from Denver on Saturday, from Denver, at noon, and arrived in Berlin noon Sunday ... a 24 hour trip. Here are are some of the highlights on NOEL's itinerary: Berlin: visit Checkpoint Charlie Museum, Olumpic Stadiu,, attend an opera (Marriage of Figaro); Monday, NOEL, and his group, will take a train to Rottenbur, - a medieval town spared the devastation of WWII, and visit a disco; Tues: train to Freiberg - Black Forrest near the boarder of France where students will separately meet with their pre-arranged German "families" they will stay with 5 nites, attend school with their "brothers and sisters". (NOEL's "family" is a family a 4 - father Stefan, mother Annette, sister Maria (18) and brother Martin (15). They will see fellow students at school, and know they are nearby. Saturday night, NOEL's "family" plans to take him into France and sight-see. Sunday: Train to Luern, Switzerland where students will reunite; Monday: train to Lindau, Germany (a town like an island which boarders Germany, Austria and Switzerland); Tues; train to Munich where they will spend 3 days: tour the Bennek Castle, visit Dracau concentration camp, and have a fancy dinner at the Augustiner Grobgaststatten - Friday morning - return to Denver.
The teacher in charge has traveled with her classes for 10 years. These studends have all taken 4 years of German and are expected to speak 100% while away, which began at the Denver airport. They are a nice group of kids; all looking pretty pumped when I left them on the 9th. They're sure to have a time of their lives, and return a bit more worldly. This year 12 girls and 7 boys participated; 9 juniors and 9 seniors. ... Love, Katy
