THANK YOU SAN DIEGO!!!!
Through your generous donations and show of support at our sale, we were able to raise close to $8,000 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Our group is currently discussing a new project that will give assistance to evacuees in our area as they look for new homes and employment opportunities. We will be updating our site with new information as our plans take shape, so please check back! Thank you again for your support! Moms on a Mission-San Diego
In
January 2005, the world witnessed a mass catastrophe, the Asian Tsunami. In response to that, millions of Americans dug deep to give
what they could to help those who were affected.
Among those who wanted to do what they could was a small group of
moms, known as the Rancho San Diego Playgroup, who met once or twice a
week to let their children play together.
One mother in particular suggested having a garage sale at her
home and sending all the proceeds to the American Red Cross to help in
any way needed. Although many of the moms in our group are stay at home
moms, in single income families who couldn’t afford to contribute
dollars, we had big hearts and some time to spare and agreed that
something must be done. The
original “garage sale” idea did not last long.
As more planning took place, that
“little garage sale” ended up as a full-blown event, held at
the Doubletree Hotel in San Diego. Teaming with the San Diego Moms
message board, we were able to raise over $7600 in just 8 hours.
Several news agencies from across the county came to see what
exactly our group was about. Many
people asked who the moms were. We
were, however, just a group of moms reaching out to help others in need,
an effort called Moms on a Mission. Right
now we are in the midst of another devastating natural disaster, right
here in America: Hurricane Katrina. The people of Louisiana,
Mississippi, Alabama and Florida desperately need our help. A new sale
is taking place Saturday, September 17.
Our goal this time is to raise over $10,000. We need your help with our new mission! We
are asking businesses if they will please donate items we can use for
our silent auction, general sale, and advertisement purposes.
What donation you make is up to you.
We do not have a 501(c)3. We
do, however, have the support of a community that we are confident will
back this effort again. Our
event in January received coverage by the San Diego Union-Tribune
and several news stations, won recognition from former San Diego Mayor
Dick Murphy, and the American Red Cross included it in their newsletter.
When you donate, you will be recognized in our list of donors
that will be displayed at the sale and on this site. We
really hope that you will see that although we are not a nationally
recognized group, or a major organization, that we did make a
difference. We have
actually witnessed how our event encouraged others to make a difference:
three M.O.M sales across the country are being planned right now for the
Hurricane victims. However,
we can’t do it without the support of the great businesses in our area
and the people in our community. If
you have any questions or would like to know how you can
help, please
feel free to contact us. Thanks
for your support, Moms on a Mission-San Diego |
