Introduction

Farming is a Members Only Skill.
Farming patches are marked with the farming patch icon.

To start farming, it is suggested you first have a seed dibber, rake, spade, compost, a watering can, and seeds of choice in your inventory.

Beginners start off at level 1 with a vegetable and flower seed (potato and marigold seeds). Herbs will come later on with a higher farming level.

(If you don't want to start off at level 1, you can do the Goblin Generals subquest in the Recipe for Disaster quest. It will put your farming level to 9 and allow you to plant cabbages right away.)

Next you will seek out a farming patch to match whatever it is you're planting. There are different types of patches all around Gielinor to grow your resources. They are specific to what you can grow. The locations and types of patches will be explained later on.

Planting
Since you're just starting out, the first type of patch you will be able to plant in is an Allotment Patch.
Upon arrival at a patch, you will notice that it is overgrown with weeds. You will need to use a rake on the patch to remove them.
Next you will treat the soil with compost to avoid disease and increase crop yield. After that, you will then use three seeds with the patch to plant it. Finally, you will water it using your watering can so it will start growing.
Sounds simple right? Keep reading, there's more to it than the simplicities.

Disease Prevention
If not properly cared for, your plants can become diseased or even die. If it becomes diseased, you can buy Plant Cure Potions from a Farming Shop for 40gp. If you don't use the Plant Cure Potion on it in time, your plant will die. Then you will have to clear the patch with a spade and start over.

You can also plant flowers to protect your crops from disease. If you don't have any flower seeds, the Gardeners that hang around the farm patches will sell them to you for 25gp.

You can either keep an eye on your farm patches yourself, or pay a nearby Gardener to take care of them.  Note that paying them might not always be cheap. Also, they will only take care of Allotment, Bush, and Tree patches.

Harvesting
Once the allocated time has passed, you will be able to "Harvest" your crops. The option will be "Pick" for bushes, fruit trees and flowers.

Make sure you harvest your crop when it's ready or else it may become diseased or die.

Tool Leprechaun

Each farming patch has a Tool leprechaun who will house some of your farming equipment in his magical shed. The Tool leprechaun will hold one rake, one spade, one trowel, one normal secateur (or one magic-not both), one seed dibber, one watering can, 31 empty buckets, 255 compost, and 255 supercompost. He will also sell you farming supplies.

Seeds

For a full list with pictures, please see Seed Types.

You can collect seeds by buying them from Olivia in Draynor, the GE, the General shop, or other players. You can get them from monster drops, by picking vegetables, or stealing from Master Farmers or seed stalls. You can even get tree seeds from the occasional bird nest.

Master Farmers are located in Draynor Market in the stall area, North of Ardougne by the potato and wheat field, and South of Varrock by Dark Wizards. The seed stalls are located in Draynor Market.

Allotment patches take 3 seeds.
Herbs, flowers and bushes take 1 seed to plant.
Hops take 4 seeds, except for Jute, which only takes 3 for some reason.
Trees and Fruit trees take one seed.

Compost

Using compost reduces the chance of crops becoming diseased, but does NOT prevent it altogether. This simply means that Farming patches treated with compost are less likely to become diseased. They will also yield a better harvest with the use of compost. Supercompost of course betters your chances even more. You can buy compost at Farming shops, but not supercompost.

To make your own compost or supercompost you need 15 of an item. For normal compost you can use all weeds, or use a mixture of weeds and vegetables or low level herbs up to ranarr.

A single click on the weeds in your inventory is all that is needed to place them all into the bin. For all other items, you must put each one in one at a time yourself..

For supercompost, you can only use specific things - Nothing of the normal compost variety. You can use 15 pineapples, 15 watermelons, or half pineapples and watermelons. You can also use papayas, jangerberries, whiteberries, poison ivy berries, tree roots, coconut shells, toadflax, bittercap mushrooms, and other herbs avantoe and higher (but not irit).

If you use any of the normal compost items with supercompost items, you will only get normal compost. This can be an expensive teaching lesson if you accidentally mix the two.
For example: 5 watermelons + 10 pineapples = super compost
4 watermelons + 10 pineapples + 1 weed = normal compost

Place your 15 items in the compost bin, close it and wait for the items to rot. When it's finished rotting (about 1 hour), you will be able to open it and use a bucket with the compost bin to collect your compost. A single click to the compost bin will fill all of your buckets, one at a time, so there's no need to continue clicking.

You will get 15 buckets of compost or supercompost depending on what you used.

If you forget what makes what type of compost, you can just show the item to a gardener and they will tell you.

Allotments, Flowers and Herbs

To plant allotment seeds, you will need to find an allotment patch. There is always a compost bin, two allotments (the long rectangle patches), one herb patch (square patch) and one flower patch (square patch in the middle) at an allotment patch.

You must have three allotment seeds to plant allotments. Herbs and flowers only take one seed.

The flowers help protect the patch from becoming diseased. Marigolds protect potatoes, onions and tomatoes. Rosemary protects cabbage and Nasturtiums will protect watermelons. Flowers require you to be a level 2 in farming in order to plant them. Have no worries, because it usually only takes a little weed raking to get to level 2.

Locations: North of Catherby, North of East Ardougne, Southeast of Falador, Northwest of Port Phasmatys

Hops

Hop patches are not in the same area as Allotment, Flower and Herb patches are.

You will need four seeds to plant a Hop field. Jute only requires three seeds for planting.

Hops are used for brewing ales. Although Jute is a Hop, the fibres can be used with a loom to weave sacks.

Ten Jute fibres can be used to bribe a farmer to watch over a patch of sweetcorn.

Locations: Southwest coast of Entrana, North of chicken coop between Lumbridge and Varrock (NOT Farmer Fred's House), Northwest of Seers Villiage, Northern Central Yanille

Trees

First you will need your Garden trowel to plant a seed in the Plant pot. You can either buy a filled Plant pot from a Farming Shop, or you can use an empty one on any garden patch to fill it with dirt. After planting the seed, water the pot, and not long after, it will begin to grow into a sapling. You will then transfer the sapling to a Tree Patch with a spade.

You will not need to water your tree patch. If a tree gets diseased, you will need to use your secateurs on the tree to remove the diseased portions. Once it is healthy and matured, you will have to chop it down. Then you will need to use your spade to removed the stump in order to replant. You will receive tree roots that can be used for many different things, including supercompost.

*Note, if you pay a gardener to watch over your tree, you will not get the roots.

Locations: Falador Park, Behind Lumbridge Castle (Just Northwest), East of Taverly, Southeast of Varrock Palace (on grounds)

Fruit Trees

Fruit trees are planted on special Fruit tree patches. Apply the same planting procedures as you do with trees.

Each tree will produce six fruits. If you pick the fruit and leave the tree, it will produce more. If your tree becomes diseased while under the care of a farmer, it will no longer grow and you will need to clear the patch and replant.

Locations: Southeast of Catherby, North coast of Brimhaven, Northwest of the Tree Gnome Village, Southeast of the Grand Tree in the Gnome Stronghold

Bushes

Bushes can only be planted at Bush patches. Bush patches do not need watering, but they can still become diseased, so take care of them.

There are six types of bushes you can plant: Redberry, Cadavaberry, Dwellberry, Jangerberry, White Berry and Poison Ivy.

There are four Bush patch locations. Varrock, west of the Champions Guild; Rimmington, just northwest of the General Shop; South West Etceteria; and South of Ardougne.

Each bush will produce four berries. If you pick them and leave the bush, it will produce more.

Locations: South of East Ardougne, North of Chemist's house in Rimmington, West of the Champion's Guild, Southwest of Etcetria Castle

Specials

All special patches require a farming Level of 42 and higher. There are seven Special patches you can grow. They are the Spirit Tree, Cactus, Jade Vine, Belladonna, Calquat tree, Bittercap mushrooms, and the Evil Turnip.

Belladonna and Bittercap mushrooms do not grow back once you harvest them.

Like any other bush or fruit tree, the Cactus and Calquat tree will grow back and you will be able to pick the fruit again after a few hours.

The Jade Vine can only be grown after completing the Back to my Roots quest.

Bittercap mushrooms can only be grown in a special patch in Morytania near the Mort Myre swamp.

Locations:

Spirit Tree - Northeast of Port Sarim, Northeast of Brimhaven, South of Etceteria

Belladonna - West of Draynor Manor

Cactus - Northeast of Al-Kharid

Calquat - North of Tai Bwo Wannai Village on Karamja

Mushroom - Southwest of Canifis

Jade Vine - West patch located in front of Lord Handelmort's mansion, in East Ardougne

Evil Turnip - Draynor Manor grounds

Herb (Special Plot) - Troll Stronghold (single patch on the roof, upon completing the My Arm's Big Adventure and it cannot become diseased)

Scarecrows

Scarecrows are used to protect sweetcorn from being eaten by birds, A.K.A. diseased. You have to build a scarecrow (level 23 farming) to put in a Flower patch.

Leave the flower in place in the Flower patch, do NOT pick them! You can put the scarecrow in with it.

When you're finished with the scarecrow you can dig it up and store it in your bank for future use.

Use an empty sack on a straw bale or stack of hay. Then use the hay sack on a bronze spear (kill goblins for spear). Use a watermelon on the spear to form a head for the scarecrow. Finally, use the scarecrow with a Flower patch.

Amulet of Farming vs. Amulet of Nature

Amulet of Nature
The Amulet of Nature can be player made by casting Enchant Level 2 on an emerald amulet strung with magic string to make a Pre-Nature Amulet. After enchantment, the amulet is not tradable. It is only tradable when it is only strung, but not yet enchanted.

It is used to monitor the state of a farming patch. It is more powerful than the Amulet of Farming.

You can bind it to any kind of patch, but it can only be bound to one patch at a time. To bind it, just "use" the amulet with the patch itself.

You can only own one at a time. Unlike the Amulet of Farming, the Amulet of Nature has unlimited charges.

You can contact the gardener of the attuned patch at anytime no matter where you are to hire their services.

When worn, the amulet will send you a message, vibrate and give off a tone to notify you if your patch is diseased, dead or fully grown. If a patch becomes diseased, you can teleport to it via the amulet. If diseased, your plant will only die if you do not act quickly once you are notified. (this can happen if you're not logged in)
You can also rub the amulet at any time to find out the current status of your patch. While wearing the amulet, it will also increase your crop yield when harvesting.

Amulet of Farming
The Amulet of Farming was introduced on February 19, 2008. The amulet can be attuned to an Allotment or Flower patch. It starts out with eight charges and is used to monitor the state of a farming patch. It's a less powerful version of the Amulet of Nature and is more easily obtained because it can be bought at a Farming Shop for 200gp. If you own more than one Amulet of Farming, they will all be bound to the same patch.

When worn, the amulet will vibrate to notify you if your patch is diseased or fully grown. You can also rub the amulet at any time to find out the current status of your patch. Each time the amulet is rubbed, it uses up a charge. Once all the charges are used up, it will crumble to dust.

Magic Secateurs

Obtained during A Fairy Tale Part I Quest. You use them to cut away dead leaves.  When equipped they will increase the amount of vegetables, herbs, or hops harvested by 10%. You can wield them as a weapon as well and will inflict damage based on the player's farming level, not strength. They are also the only weapon able to damage tanglefoot in Zanaris. If destroyed, they can be bought back from Malignius Mortifer for 40k.

Request Assistance

There are times when our skills fall a little short and we need assistance. Right click on the player offering to assist you, and "request assist". If they accept, a pair of hands will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen. You will then be able to plant, harvest or whatever it is you need help with.

You keep the items, they get the experience.

Assist exceptions: Assist does not work with certain things and can only be grown once you've reached that level.
All trees and quest related items.

Achievement Cape

Once you've reached level 99 in farming, you may want to buy the Farming Cape of Achievement for 99,000gp from Martin, the master farmer in Draynor Village Square. Farming capes are dark green in colour. If the player has more than one level 99 skill, it will have light green trim.

All capes come with matching hoods; hoods give no bonus, they just look cool. Each cape has a special emote, geared to the skill it's received for, that can be performed while wearing the cape. The emote performed: you sprinkle seeds on the ground, water them; flowers grow, you pick one and smell it.
While wearing the cape, the matching skill's max level will increase to 100. Untrimmed capes give +9 Defence bonus, Trimmed capes give +9 Defence bonus along with +4 Prayer bonus.

TIPS

Plant pots
Filled Plant pots only cost 1gp at Farming shops, or you can make your own pottery (crafting skill level 19) by mining clay, using water on it to make soft clay, then use the soft clay with a pottery wheel to make an Unfired Plant pot. Use the Unfired Plant pot with a pottery oven. You will receive 37.5 Exp; each trip will give you 1,036 Exp for a full inventory of 28.

Crop/Patch Hopping / Crop Running
No matter how you say it, it can be very successful and fun. Don't limit yourself to just one farm patch. Make use of as many of the patches as you're able.
To make your travel easier, bring runes for teleporting back and forth between the patches. The Explorer's Ring is a handy little tool and makes travel time just as quick as the runes (plus you travel in style!).
The Amulet of Glory will teleport you to different patches all over Gielinor as well.
Looking for more detailed info on Crop Running? There's a great section on RuneScape Wiki on it.

Sacks and Baskets
Sacks are useful for quests and other tasks when you need to carry several produce items because it will hold 10 onions, potatoes or cabbage.
Baskets are also useful for the same reason, but they only hold 5 fruit. They come in handy when harvesting and for paying a Gardener.

Watering
Vegetables, flowers and hops need constant watering. If you don't want to stand around and do this, you can always pay one of the patch Farmers to do it for you. Hops requires 5 waterings. The first four waterings are usually 5 minutes apart with the last being 10 minutes. If it gets diseased before the last watering, treat the hops with Plant Cure, water it and then you will wait 10 minutes before you can harvest it.

Coconuts for Supercompost
Once you've obtained a coconut, use a hammer on it to turn it into half a coconut. Use the half-coconut on an empty vial to obtain coconut milk (used in Herblore for some high level potions) and a coconut shell. You can then use your coconut shells for the supercompost.
Coconuts can be obtained from a player-grown palm trees or from nature implings in the minigame, Impetuous Impulses.

Pineapples
You can buy pineapples from Hudo and Heckel Funch at the Grand Tree in the Tree Gnome Stronghold for 2gp each (They each have an inventory stock of 10). You can either wait for their stock to fill back up, or you can world hop to buy more.
You can also purchase them from Arhein in Catherby for 2gp each, but his stock is limited to 40 per day. Which really isn't too bad, unless you plan to do a LOT of farming that day.

Watermelons
Watermelons can be used to make a scarecrow by using it with a hay sack and a bronze spear. They can also be used to make Supercompost or you can cut it with a knife, turning it into 3 Watermelon slices to be eaten to enjoy or heal four Hitpoints.
Gardeners require 6 watermelons to watch over your Jangerberry bush, and 10 watermelons for a Pineapple tree.

Papayas
Papayas (15) are used to pay farmers to watch palm trees. Since palm trees are a commonly grown tree, you can get paid pretty nicely for papayas when sold to other players.

Temporary Boosts
* Cider boosts farming by 1 (Player made, Cooking Level)
* Mature cider boosts farming by 2 (Player made, Cooking Level)
* Garden pie boosts farming by 3 (Player made, Cooking Level)
* Brown spicy stew has a chance of boosting or lowering farming by 2, 4, or 6 (available from the Evil Dave subquest of Recipe for Disaster.)
