Thanks for some great advice, and I love reading your articles. Lisa HolzerLansing, MichiganQUESTION:I have recently had a problem develop with my 4-year-old male golden retriever. He is a finished show dog (standing at stud) and is working towards becoming a certified search dog, so he has a high level of obedience. My problem is with an 8-month-old show puppy (out of my stud) and my male who live together. They lived together peacefully for 7 months but in the last month my male has started putting the puppy in his place. My problem is that he is doing it quite forcefully to a point of where I am nervous even having them in the same room because I am concerned about the puppy's well being. Every person I have talked to including, behaviorist, breeders, handlers and trainers, all agree that my male is not dog aggressive and what they are doing is completely natural. What I want to know is if there is anything I can do to try and lower the force that my male is using? What I can do to help smooth over the transition of the puppy into adolescence and then adulthood without my male looking upon him as a challenge? Or should I place the show puppy in another home and work with integrating a bitch into the house rather then another male?I would greatly appreciate your input. If you know of anyone in Washington State that I can contact I am more then willing to try anything. Obviously I have a working relationship with my 4-year-old and wouldn't trade him for the world, but I really enjoy the puppy also.
