June 20th, 2003 Caving/Prospecting Trip |
At 4:30 A.M. on the 20th of June, Daryn and I headed out on another early morning adventure. The goal was to go explore some old mines back American Fork Canyon. After a long drive in the dark, we got the back near Mary Ellen Gulch, found the old Scotchman Mine, Pacific Mine, and a few others. Unfortunately, they were all closed up so we weren't able to go inside any of these. We started heading down the canyon when we almost didn't make it out because of some dumb high school girl driving in a Ford Focus on a road that was made for higher clearance vehicles. After overcoming that problem, Daryn saw something on the other side of the creek and asked me to stop. We made a pit stop here for awhile to check out the area. Check out the pictures. |

A view from where we parked. Obviously, my digital camera needs fresh batteries. |

Off to the left is a picture of the cave that Daryn saw from the road. After crossing the stream, we entered these two small caves, that were very disappointing. In the picture, it is nearly impossible to see the cave opening. From the road, it is much easier to see. |

One thing I taught Daryn how to do on one of our outings is how to pan for gold. On the right are two pictures of us guys testing the water. We found some flake gold, but no placers. Panning is a fun activity when caves aren't as abundant. One day, we might hit the motherlode. |

By the way, this day of panning wasn't the best. The temperature in the canyon was in the high 40's and the water, which is partially fed by nearby melting snow, was really cold. Both of us were glad we didn't fall in at any point. |
