The Moldy Peaches began in 1994 when Adam Green and Kimya Dawson met very briefly at the Sidewalk Cafe in New York, they then met again at a record store of which Kimya was the manager of. They soon became friends despite their age gap of 8 years. One day Kimya gave Adam a lift to his friend Kurt Feldman's house, Kurt and Adam along with another freind Denise Koleda started playing some music and they asked Kimya to join in, so she started singing Little Bunny Foo Foo, and this became the first Moldy Peaches song. From there Adam and Kimya recorded 11 more songs together and put out a CD called Fer The Kids. The band recommenced in 1999 under the name; Moldy Peaches 2000 (MP2k). Adam joined Kimya in Port Townsend, Washington, where she had moved. They started playing seriously as a band with Jest Commons on guitar and Justice Campbell on drums. They moved back to New York and were joined by Brian Piltin on Bass. Unfortunately MP2k ended in October of that year, when Jest and Justice both decided to move back home. The Moldy Peaches reformed once again, in August 2000 for the New York Anti-Folk festival. Joining the line-up of Kimya, Adam and Brian were Brent Cole on drums and Chris Barron on Guitar. After swapping Brian for Steve Mertens and Chris for Jack Dishel, the Moldy Peaches put out another album called Ferever. This album was heard by Rough Trade and Geoff Travis of the label came to check them out. He swiftly signed them up with the intention of releasing an album of whatever songs they wanted. In April 2001 the Moldy Peaches released their debut single; Who's got the crack / NYC's like a graveyard. Suddenly they started getting widespread UK music press coverage. In May they released what is officially their Debut album; The Moldy Peaches, comprising of recordings from their other two CDs. In June they made their debut UK live appearance, a sellout show at the Camden Barfly, London, with an audience full of celebrities, such as Jarvis Cocker, Cerys Matthews, and me ;-). In September, on the back of successful Reading and Leeds festival appearances, they released their album in America. The Moldy Peaches are currently on an extensive US tour, supporting the Strokes. With more exciting things hopefully on the way, the future looks bright for the unstoppable Moldy Peaches! |
