The Random Riots
Five years ago humanity lost its mind.  In the middle of a normal workday a crowd of people from all walks of sprawl life began to riot.  The subways were ransacked.  A retail section of the city was demolished.  By the time Metro Security arrived, the carnage and destruction were unbelievable.  The first Secs on the scene were instantly set upon by the crowd.  Bullets and anti-riot weaponry were useless.  The sqquad was killed within seconds. mjbdgr.jpg (35260 bytes)

The next wave of Secs barricaded the rioters against further movement and sent in WURCs.  Again, the first wave of these were destroyed and had very little effect on the crowd.  As a last resort, nerve toxins were pumped through the crowd to sedate them.  It took massive quantities of the gas to accomplish this task.

When the rioters awakened, they remembered nothing and were disturbed by the scenes around them.  Many fell into shock instantly.  Analysis of the events left the masses bewildered and horrified.  There was no real reason for the riot.  No one took credit for the slaughter or claimed to have led the event.  Most of the crowd lead radically different lives and very rarely came in contact with one another.  The dramatic pace the riot initiated left Researchers scratching their heads.

Over the next few months, identical incidents broke out all over the world.  The Global Government put WURC Patrol craft and surveillance systems throughout the sprawls.   A police state was called globally.  Oddly enough, this relieved more of the population than it upset.  The ravages of the riots were known to all.  By the end of 2090, everyone had seen what a random riot could do first hand.

Metro Security was increased ten fold and supplied with the latest in military suppression hardware. Unfortunately, such weaponry is effectively useless.  Rioters seem to lose all sense of themselves or their bodies.  In effect, they become a horde of berzerkers.  The only recourse in many instances is crowd suppression fire from live rounds.  The nerve toxins stopped being effective after a few months.
