International Business & Computer Information Systems

SLC Offered: Citywide; students who live anywhere in the city may apply.

Entrance Requirements: Students selected based on their skills as reflected on the Personal Statement essay; in-class writing sample; good attendance; test scores; minimum “C” math grades; and minimum 2.0 GPA ("C" average).

Description: Students in the International Business and Information Systems SLC will participate in a program emphasizing job-ready skills that allow them to be successful after high school - whether they go directly into the workplace or on to post-secondary studies. Students will have real world experiences through job shadowing, e-mentoring (corresponding with an adult professional via e-mail), and summer internships with local employers.

There are two pathways from which students may choose:  International Business or Information Systems.  The International Business track will allow students to take advantage of Roosevelt's strong World Language Department and diverse student population to provide students the necessary background to compete in the global economy.  Students can study languages including French, Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic while enrolling in courses that address diverse business situations - both inside and outside of our country.  Within this track, students may elect a sub-focus in office administration, entrepreneurship, or general business.

The Information Systems track allows students to focus on software development using computer languages to develop applications or services that enable users to complete various tasks on a computer such as games or web pages.  Students may also gain expertise in computer applications such as Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Access).  Students can also learn to design and manage web pages. Regardless of the focus, students will develop their skills through hands-on activities, guest speakers, and tours of local computer-related facilities.

Students Experience: Teachers have developed interdisciplinary units to show students that information from multiple classes is often necessary to solve problems or generate new ideas.  Our advisories (home rooms) are grouped by SLC and grade level to permit team-building and the presentation of career planning information as students proceed through high school. Students are required to complete 60 hours of community service during their four years at Roosevelt and to be good citizens of our school community.

Students are encouraged to participate in school activities including the Business Professionals of America (BPA) club and the Stock Market game. Each year students are able to challenge the skills of their peers from around the city, state, or country through competitions and leadership events. Recently three students went to Texas and competed in nationals for BPA.  Additionally, every student will have the opportunity to be eligible for scholarships through our partnerships with community businesses and organizations.

Sample of Classes: One of the benefits of this SLC is its flexibility in allowing students to build a program which meets their individual needs.  For example, if a student wishes to oversee a medical office, he or she can take classes from our department such as computer applications and accounting while choosing relevant courses from the Health Careers / Medical SLC to gain a better grasp of medical concepts. Classes may include:
