Hollandse Smalspoor Stichting (Watkijk) |

Watkijk (HSS) was born out of a few FLEISCHMANN Magic Train startersets. Intended for kids, but nice as a start in Oe or O-16,5. Inspiration came from a preserved narrow gauge railway in the dunes near Katwijk, close to the Dutch coast. Operated by the Nederlandse Smalspoor Stichting (NSS) it sadly had to move to Valkenburg, a little more inland. It does however have a very interesting industrial narrow gauge museum on its grounds now, apart from a railway line around a lake. My HSS (makes a better logo!) is fictional, but seeks to recreate the atmosphere of a trip through a seaside area. It has a hole-digging German, so typical of our coastal area. The burning sun (not very Dutch I admit) and the sound of seagulls add to the picture. Stock is varied as on most preserved railways. Unlikely visitors are a complete tram from my hometown-area and an African type of enginge, made by an English friend. The rest is bits and pieces, explained on a board to the right of the layout. The baseboards are open framed, covered with plastered cloths on chicken-wire, with real sand on top. Vegetation is mainly dyed carpet underfelt. The pond is cast resin. Track is PECO, points are operated with wire-in-tubes. Hope you like my little exercise in 0-16,5' Guillaume Veenhuis |
