Joseph Moby Jr., the son of Joseph Susan Moby, was born June
1870 in Michigan. He married Mary
Lake about 1891 in Mason County,
Michigan. Mary
Lake, the daughter of Ephrum and Marian Lahay, was born
October 1868 in Hamlin Township, Michigan. Joseph was listed with his parents on the
1870 and 1880 United States Census.
In
1900 Joseph and Mary Moby are listed on the United States Census in Branch
Township, Mason County,
Michigan. They had Joseph’s parents,
Joseph and Susan Moby, living with them at the time. Joseph’s brother James and his family was
living next to them. Joseph Moby, age
29, was born June 1870. Mary, age 31,
was born in October 1868. They had been
married for 8 years. They have four
children: Rosie, age 8, born 1891, Lizzie, age 5, born January 1895, David, age
2, born June 1889, and Mary, age 3 months, born in February 1900. All members of the family were born in Michigan. Joseph is listed as a farmer. They are all listed as Ottawa
and
Pottawatomie,
living in a fixed residence, paying taxes, and having acquired citizenship in
1855.
In 1920 Joe and Mary Moby are listed on the United States
Census for Vilas County, Washington
County, Wisconsin. Joe, age 49, is the head of his household
which includes his wife, Mary, and daughter, Rosie, who is 26 years old. He owns his home which is mortgaged. He can read and write and he speaks
English. He and his parents were all
born in Michigan. He is employed as a lumberjack in the Lumber
Camp W. It shows Mary, age 50, and her mother were born in Michigan.
Her father was born in Canada
and his mother tongue is Indian. Above
the word Indian it looks like the letters O L are written. Mary is listed as an
Indian. She can read and write and
speaks English. She was not employed. Rosie is listed as being married. She could read and write and speaks
English. She was not employed.
In 1930 Joseph and Mary Moby were listed together for the
United States Census in Phelps Township,
Vilas County, Wisconsin. They were renting their home for $50 a
month. Joseph was listed as 59 years old
and Mary was 60. They were married at
the age of 21 and 22 respectively. They
were both born in Michigan. Joseph is listed as a laborer involved in
lumbering.
Joseph died in February 1957. He was buried in North
Victory Cemetery,
Scottville, Michigan. Mary died November 25, 1957 in Lansing,
Michigan.
She was also buried in North Victory
Cemetery. Her obituary appeared in the Ludington Daily
News:
Mrs. Mary Moby Taken By Death
Mrs. Mary Moby, 89, died Monday evening in Lansing
following a fire at the home of her son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. John
Bonner, with whom she had resided for five years.
Mrs. Moby, who had been an invalid for two years, was
rescued from the burning house, dying later.
Mary Leahy was born in Hamlin township in October,
1868. She grew up in Mason county where
she was married to Joseph Moby and where she continued to live until going to
Lansing to make her home with Mr. and Mrs. Bonner. In Mason county she
was a member of Sacred Heart church in Hamlin and in Lansing of Church of
the Resurrection.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Bonner and Mrs.
Rose Lucian of Lansing, Mrs. Mary Huston of Muskegon and Mrs. Katherine Nelson
of Chicago; a son, David Moby of Lansing; three sisters, Mrs. Eliza Compeau and Mrs. Alma Olk of Lugington Route 3 and Mrs. Alice Bendickson
of Ludington; two brothers, Frank and William Leahy of Muskegon; 19
grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, three great great
grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in February, 1957.
