Mary Mawby and Edward Hall

 

Mary Mawby, the daughter of Joe and Susan Moby, was born about 1872 in Michigan.  She married Edward Hall, the son of Tay-baw-se-kezhick-way-um.  He was born about 1873 in Custer, Michigan. 

 

Mary Mawby was listed on the 1880 United States census with her parents.  There is an Eddie Hall listed on the 1880 census for Custer Township, Mason County, Michigan.  Eddie was six years old.  His parents are listed as Joseph Hall, age 42, and Katherine Hall, age 40.  Also listed are Sarah, age 15, and Yacarrias, age 13. 

 

Edward and Mary were married on June 13, 1893 in Custer Township, Mason County, Michigan.  There marriage is record number 848 in Book 3 of the Mason County Marriages on page 67.  The record shows that Edward was 20 years old born in Michigan and Indian.  He was employed as a laborer in Custer, Michigan.  His father was Joseph Hall and his mother was not known.  Mary Moby was 21 years old, born in Michigan, and Indian.  She was residing in Custer, Michigan.  Her father was Joseph Moby and her mother was not known.  The service was officiated by Philip L. Yorn, and witnessed by Moses Girvedjiwan and Nancy Giwedjiwan.  It stated that neither had been married previously. 

 

Edward Hall and Mary Mawby had one son, Joe Hall, born about 1895. 

 

On May 9, 1904, Edward Hall married Martha Bailey in Ludington, Michigan.  There marriage is record number 2441 in book 3 of the Mason County Marriages Book on page 190.  The record states that Eddie Hall, age 28, Indian, laborer of Custer Michigan, born in Custer Michigan, son of Geo Hall and Elizabeth Green, married once previously was married to Martha Bailey, age 19, Indian, dressmaker of Fern Michigan, born in Fern Michigan, daughter of Henry Bailey and Mary Wakefield, not previously married, by Henry C Rausoner, Judge of Probate, in Ludington, Michigan.  The marriage was witnessed by PE Bailey of Ludington, and AB Major of Eden Township.

 

 Eddie and Martha Hall had two children, Milo, born about 1905, and Sarah, born about 1906.  The 1908 Durant Field Notes state that Edward and Martha were separated at the time, and that Mary Mawby was dead.

 

Eddie Hall was listed on the 1910 United States census for Custer Township, Mason County, Michigan.  He was living with John Wabindato, Martha Shaw, and son Joseph Hall.  Eddie is listed as 35 and widowed.  Joseph is listed as 15.  Both men were listed as born in Michigan.  It states that Eddie’s parents were born in Ohio.  It states that Eddie speaks English, but that Joseph only speaks Ottawa.  All members of the family were full blooded Ottawa. 

 

On the 1920 Census Edward, age 49, and wife Mary, age 33, are listed together for Vilas Township, Washington County, Michigan.  According to the census, Edward is renting his home.  He can read and write and speak English.  He and both of his parents were born in Michigan.  He is Indian.  He is employed as a laborer at the Lumber Camp W.  Mary can read and write and speaks English.  She is not employed.  Her home is rented.  They live two houses away from Joe Moby and one house away from Joe Moby Jr., and his family.  Their son Louis was born in Michigan so they would have only come to Wisconsin in the past five years.

 

In the 1930 Census, Edward is a widower, with 3 children: Louis, age 16, Ruth, age 9, and John, age 7.  They are residing in Phelps Township, Vilas County, Wisconsin.  Michigan is listed at the birthplace of all 3 children, however, in both 1920 and 1930 they were living in Wisconsin.
