| St John, Virgin Islands | Part 1 Next | |||
| We started planning for this trip a bit too late,
as usual. After securing the flights to St Thomas on January 17th, 2000 we
started to surf the Web to find a place to stay. Marja wanted a place with
kitchen close to beach. Last time we were staying at St Thomas in beach
side condo on the Secret
Harbour Beach Resort and that vacation was really nice and
memorable so we were looking for something similar in St John.
After few days of calling and emailing to many places we realized that St John will be packed during the spring break. Eventually I called Lisa Durgin tel: +1 (340)776-6462 and she was able to find a place to meet the requirements: the place is called Villa Splash and it is located on Great Cruz Bay in St John. Since the place seemed quite spacious we invited Marja's brother Kari and his wife Mervi to join us. Three months passed by and suddenly it was time to go. We arrived in St Thomas and took a cab to Red Hook port. While waiting for ferry Minttu and Mauri went to local Marina Market to buy some groceries. The place was packed with people and it took so long to get our stuff that we had to run to make it to the ferry. Trip to St John was quick, just 20 minutes and Lisa was waiting for us with white-green umbrella that was her trademark I guess. We were trying to look for Kari and Mervi who were supposed to wait for us in St John, but we couldn't see any sign of them. We managed to get ourselves and our luggage to Villa Splash that looked very nice property indeed. It took about 30 seconds for Minttu to find the in-doors pool and she staid there the rest of the vacation, almost. At some point Lisa was concerned that Minttu would turn into prunes for staying a long time in water. The sun was setting and we were unpacking. We were getting more and more concerned about Kari and Mervi. Their flight had landed on time in St Thomas airport but there was no sign of them. No messages and no phonecalls. Finally Kari called us. When Marja started wondering why they are not here Kari ended the call quickly. An hour later they called us again from the JFK airport saying that they are on stand-by for flight to San Juan and don't know yet how to get to St John. For some reason they had a bit of mix-up with dates. After breakfast we drove along route 20 to Hawknest Bay and did some snorkling and swimming. The beach is shallow and there is not very much coral to see, but quit a lot of fish. On the way back there was a voicemail from Kari saying that they are now in San Juan and on stand-by for a flight to St Thomas. Finally at dusk Kari called again for a pick-up from Cruz Bay, St John. Kari and Mervi looked a bit weary after long travel so we prepared a big dinner for them. They were sleeping in 2 seconds after hitting the hay. |
