Brain Injury Support Group Meeting

Forty-three survivors, caregivers, and friends present

Meeting started at 7:15

Brief welcome by Karen Feld and introduction of guest speakers Bill Hitch, Neuropsychologist and Alison Draheim, Social Worker.

New Business
- Guest speaker for February meeting will be Chaplin Mike Murphy. His topic 'A Journey Toward Health'
- BIAW conference to be held in Green Bay April 26 & 27 at KI Center

Speaker Bill Hitch gave a very interesting discussion on the anatomy of the brain and answered many question for the attendees. Some of his topics were:
- Time limit of the recovery process
- Final outcome of a TBI is unknown
- Importance of support structure for TBI Victim
- Impact on TBI Victim from Drugs, alcohol, and second head injury
- Cause and result of seizures
- Functions of the various parts of the brain

Speaker Alison Draheim added several different perspectives on issues brought up during Bill Hitch�s question and answer session. Her presentation included the following points.
- Support organizations available to the TBI victim and their families
- The importance of being pro-active and an advocate for yourself during the recovery process
- Importance of the �Team of People� supporting the TBI Victim
- What part a positive attitude plays in the adjustment period
- Life changes of the victim and family
- The grieving process

Both speakers were excellent and imparted important and interesting information to the attendees. Education is a key ingredient to the recovery process for all people affected by TBI.

The evening ended with informal exchanges among the attendees.
