| GORONTALO Located in the western part of North Sulawesi, it borders Central Sulawesi, with a land mass of 1,215,065 ha and a population of 668,228 (1996). The lake and rivers are extremely important for irrigation for the surrounding rice fields. The fertile soil in this area is particularly good for rice and corn. Jalaludin Airport at Isimu connects this area via limited domestic flights. Gorontalo and Kwandang seaports are readily accessed by various ferry services and Pelni Lines Gorontalese are known for their Krawang embroidery (dress material) as souvenirs to visitors. Rattan furniture which is made in Gorontalo and Krawang handicrafts are mostly found in the markets in Manado. Gorontalo people have a legend of their origin. They believe that the word "Gorontalo" was derived from the word "Hulontalangi" which means wonder. The legend tells about a man sailing in his small boat. He later arrived at the foot of Mt. Tilongkabila and at that time it was flood tide and the flat area surrounding the mountain was covered with water. He was alone, until another boat of eight passengers arrived. Legend has it that he married a woman named Tilopudelo, who was one of the passengers. Their descendants are now residing in the area that is called "Gorontalo". The ceremony of welcoming guests is particularly characteristic of the people from Gorontalo. It is expressed in their motto: Tradition has been established and left to be executed. This kind of ceremony is usually performed to welcome honorable guests such as a president, minister, governor, ambassador and other visitors. Gorontalese retains many traditional dances, which still reflect the people's heritage. Some of the popular dances are: Kalung Dance of "Tidi Lotihu", is specifically performed on formal occasions.
