Overview of the MLT-C Program

     The MLT-C program is twelve months in length.  During the first six months students are given didactic coursework along with college laboratory experiences.  These classes  are taught in Hampton at Thomas Nelson Community College.   The final six months of training are done at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.

 

Program Goal

     The goal of the TNCC MLT-C program is to train selected Navy personal to be Medical Laboratory Technicians who will meet all Navy readiness requirements.  Included, is training to perform routine laboratory tests under the direction of a pathologist or Medical Technologist and to prepare the students with the training required for certification and employment as Naval Medical Laboratory Technicians and for transfer into baccalaureate clinical laboratory science programs.

     Medical Laboratory (MDL) courses will be conducted all day every Mon-Fri.  Courses will be conducted on alternating days:  Mon, Wed, Fri or Tues and Thurs.  Med Lab lectures will be conducted from 0800 to 1130.  Lunchtime will be from 1130-1230.   In the afternoon, the class will divide into 2 groups for lab sessions (Rm. 317).   One group's lab session will be held from 1230-1430, followed by the other group's lab session from 1430-1630.  Seminars may be given during the non lab time.
