     General Courses

MTH 126 Mathematics for Allied Health (2 credits) Prerequisite(s): A placement recommendation for MTH 126 and Algebra I or equivalent (MTH 03). Presents scientific notation, precision and accuracy, decimals and percents, ratio and proportion, variation, simple equations, techniques of graphing, use of charts and tables, logarithms, and the metric system. Lecture 2 hours per week.

ENG 111 College Composition I (3 credits) Prerequisite(s): "C" average or better for four units of high school English (or equivalent) and satisfactory score on the placement exam or satisfactory completion of ENG 03, ENG 05. Develops writing ability for study, work, and other areas of life, with emphasis on expository and persuasive writing expected in college courses. Includes writing based on experience, observation, research, and reading of selected literature. Guides students in learning writing as a process: understanding audience and purpose, exploring ideas and information through analytical reading, composing, revision, and editing. Includes introduction to literature. Supports writing by integrating experiences in thinking, reading, listening, and speaking. Lecture 3 hours per week.

CHM 110 Survey of Chemistry (3 credits) Prerequisite(s): Algebra I or MTH 03. Introduces the basic concepts of general, organic, and biochemistry with emphasis on their applications to other disciplines. Lecture 3 hours per week.

CHM 122 Health Science Chemistry II (4 credits) Prerequisite(s): CHM 110. Introduces the health science student to concepts of inorganic, organic, and biological chemistry as applicable to the allied health profession. Lecture 3 hours + lab 3 hours = total 6 hours per week.

BIO 100 Basic Human Biology (3 credits) Prerequisite(s): ENG 05 if required by individual student's placement. Presents basic principles of human anatomy and physiology. Discusses cells, tissues, and selected human systems. Lecture 3 hours per week.

BIO 205 General Microbiology (4 credits) Prerequisite(s): ENG 05 if required by individual student's placement; BIO 102, BIO 145; CHM 112; one year of college biology and one year of college chemistry or divisional approval. Examines morphology, genetics, physiology, ecology, and control of microorganisms. Emphasizes application of microbiological techniques to selected fields. Lecture 3 hours + recitation and lab 3 hours = total 6 hours per week.

 

     Medical Laboratory Courses

MDL 101 Introduction to Medical Laboratory Techniques (3 credits) Prerequisite(s): ENG 05 if required by individual student's placement; Permission of Program Director. Introduces the basic techniques including design of the health care system, ethics, terminology, calculations, venipuncture, and routine urinalysis. Lecture 2 hours + lab 3 hours = 5 hours per week.

MDL 110 Urinalysis and Body Fluids (2 credits) Prerequisite(s): MDL 101 or permission of Program Director. Studies the gross, chemical, and microscopic techniques used in the clinical laboratory. Emphasizes study of clinical specimens, which include the urine, feces, cerebrospinal fluid blood, and exudates. Introduces specimen collection and preparation. Lecture 2 hours + lab 3 hours 5 hours per week.

MDL 125 Hematology I (3 credits) Prerequisite(s): MDL 101 or permission of Program Director. Teaches fundamentals of study of blood and blood formation. Lecture 2 hours + lab 3 hours = total 5 hours per week.

MDL 210 Immunology and Serology (2 credits) Prerequisite(s): MDL 101 or permission of Program Director. Teaches principles of basic immunology, physiology of the immune system, diseases involving the immune system, as well as serologic procedures. Lecture 1 hour + lab 3 hours = total 4 hours per week.

MDL 216 Blood Banking (3 credits) Prerequisite(s): MDL 101 and MDL 210 or permission of Program Director. Teaches fundamentals of blood grouping and typing, compatibility testing, antibody screening, component preparation, donor selection, and transfusion reactions and investigation. Lecture 2 hours + lab 3 hours = total 5 hours per week.

MDL 225 Clinical Hematology II (3 credits) Prerequisite(s): MDL 101, MDL 110, MDL 125, MDL 210, MDL 220, or permission of Program Director. Teaches advanced study of blood, abnormal blood formation, and changes seen in various diseases. Lecture 2 hours + lab 3 hours = total 5 hours per week.

MDL 251 Clinical Microbiology I (3 credits) Prerequisite(s): BIO 205, MDL 110, MDL 125, MDL 210, MDL 220, or permission of Program Director. Teaches handling, isolation, and identification of pathogenic microorganisms. Emphasizes clinical techniques of bacteriology Lecture 2 hours + lab 3 hours = total 5 hours per week.

MDL 252 Clinical Microbiology II (2 credits) Prerequisite(s): BIO 205, MDL 110, MDL 125, MDL 210, MDL 220, MDL 251, or permission of Program Director. Teaches handling, isolation, and identification of pathogenic microorganisms. Emphasizes clinical techniques of mycology, parasitology and virology. Lecture 1 hour + lab 3 hours = total 4 hours per week.

MDL 262 Clinical Chemistry and Instrumentation (4 credits) Prerequisite(s): CHM 102 or CHM 112, MDL 110, MDL 125, MDL 210, MDL 220 or permission of Program Director. Introduces methods of performing biochemical analysis of clinical specimens. Teaches instrumentation involved in a clinical chemistry laboratory, quality control, and the ability to recognize technical problems. Lecture 2-3 hours + lab 3 hours = total 5-6 hours per week.

 

     Medical Laboratory Internships

MDL 190 Coordinated Internship (1 credit) Prerequisite(s): MDL 101, MDL 110, MDL 125, MDL 210, or permission of Program Director. Supervised internship.  Main topic of study is urinalysis, with additional areas to be covered if time permits: basic hematology, immunology, and phlebotomy. Variable hours.

MDL 280 Clinical Correlations and Pathophysiology (2 credits) Prerequisite(s): MDL 110, MDL 125, MDL 210, MDL 216, MDL 225, MDL 251, MDL 252, MDL 262, or permission of Program Director. Introduces the practice of laboratory medicine and encourages the development of critical thinking skills. Includes control and methodology selection criteria. Lecture 2 hours per week.

MDL 290 Coordinated Internship (5 credits) Prerequisite(s): MDL 110, MDL 125, MDL 210, MDL 216, MDL 220, MDL 225, MDL 251, MDL 252, MDL 262, or permission of Program Director. Topics to include Microbiology, Hematology, Blood Banking, Chemistry, and Serology. Variable hours.
