GUIDELINES FOR NOTE CARDS |

First complete a source card in the correct form and number it.
Skim the source to determine if it will supply evidence for your research. Not all your possible sources will be useful. If you decide not to use a source, set the card aside in case you change your mind later.
If a source appears useful, take notes on all relevant sections.
Write the number of the source in the upperright hand corner of the note card.
Put the source's page number at the bottom of the card.
Put a label phrase, which is derived from your research questions or preliminary outline, at the top of the card. As you take notes, remember these points:
One note per card
Write on only one side of the card. (It's easy to overlook information written on the back of a card.)
Avoid plagiarism! Don't copy sentences from a source without showing you are using a direct quotation.
Put quotation marks around all quotes.
Remember to paraphrase or summarize most of your notes. Save direct quotations for particularly important or powerful passages. Organize your cards as you write them. Use paper clips or rubber bands to keep note cards with similar labels together.
