Daniel's Year in Review |
On Feb 4, 2003, Daniel left for a semester of study in Belize. While he was hoping for adventure, the adventure has been much more than bargained for. On Feb 21, Dan was in a remote tropical forest studying watershed ecology with his class when he was caught in the current of the Macal River and washed over the Vaca Falls, fell 10-15 feet and was trapped under water for several minutes. His professor, Dr. Boles helped to dislodge him and his classmate, a recently trained EMT named Frank Carter administered CPR with assistance from Aimee. After perhaps 20 minutes Dan began to breathe on his own again. He was eventually flown by helicopter to a hospital in Belize City and the following day was flown to Houston where Mark, Lydia and girlfriend (now fiancee) Sarah met him in the ER. The details of the story can be read by clicking on the links below. Dan returned to Minnesota on March 15 by commerical airline. He returned to Gustavus Adolphus College this fall part-time and hopes to walk through graduation in June. Mark sent out daily email updates throughout the time in Houston.
