BANGKOK, THAILAND
We went to the International School of Bangkok (ISB), where I attended first and second grade
We lived in Bangkok, Thailand from the Summer of 1965 to the Spring of 1968.  It's amazing how much I remember, because I was only 5-8 years old then.  We left southeast Asia--"bugging-out" after the Tet offensive, which was a turning point in the Vietnam War.

We stayed in the Penthouse of the
Erawan Hotel for awhile and then moved into a house at #75 Soi 12 on the south side of  Sukhumvit Road.  We also had a beach house in Hua Hin.

I remember that we used to go to the U.S. Embassy regularly to get our mail.
Here's an old sketch I made from a photo of our house on Soi 12; upstairs was Mom and Dad's room to the left, the boy's room in the middle and the girl's room on the right; downstairs was the porch, the livingroom  to the left, the den in the middle and the dining room to the right with the kitchen behind it; the garage and servants quarters were in a separate building off to the right; here we lived like kings and queens, who would have known then that 10 years later when my folks divorced that Barb, John and I would end-up on the free/discount lunch and breakfast program at Annandale High School
I also remember that there was a temple, perhaps Wat Phra Kaeo (the Golden Palace), in the vicinity of the American Embassy
My Mom and I used to take long walks down our Soi to the Kangaroo Bakery on Sukhumvit Road and back; along the way we would stop at a shady pond with a small bridge and feed the Koi "goldfish"  breadcrumbs
We were overseas so my Dad, John Stanley Konoza, working for the CIA, could teach guerilla warfare to the Thai Army and Police in the northeast, where they were opposing the Khmer Rouge across the border with Cambodia.  He also spent some time working in Danang, South Vietnam.

I started school in Bangkok in 1966 at the age of six--the first grade.  The International School of Bangkok (ISB) didn't have kindergarten then.  I was one of the oldest kids in my class, turning seven in November.  My teacher's name was Mrs. Peducci.  What is now called the "old school" was on Sukhumvit Soi 15.

That school year (1966-1967) my sisters Barb and Pat  were in the second and tenth grades respectively.  Geri had graduated in the Spring.  The next year while I was in second grade my favorite subjects were the Gemini space program and art.
Here's a polaroid of Geri and a friend ready for their Senior Prom in May 1966; they are standing in front of the apartment building, which was across the street from our house
Here's a late 60's/early 70's photo of Sukhumvit Road near Soi 13 taken from a Veteran GIs website
My classes went on many interesting field trips, like the one to the snake farm.  We saw venom-milking and I remember getting the most interesting class picture ever.  We all stood shoulder to shoulder and held a HUGE python, which was as long as we were wide!
Once we visited the Bangkok Zoo and I'll never forget getting spit on by a giraffe after feeding it some grub (yes, we were allowed to feed the animals there)
Thai boxing is a type of kick boxing, which has become popular nowadays--so what...I saw it 30 years ago at a place called Timland; also to be seen there was silk being woven and asian elephants doing the work of large cranes by lifting tons of lumber
A deadly King Cobra visited the compound where we lived one night; spotted by our German Shepherd "King", who sounded the alarm by barking continuously;  then it was killed by our gardener Pim with a machete.
