Days Two and Three: September 9th and 10th, 2002
Me at lunch on the second day, talking to kids from the school, where we stopped
SECOND AND THIRD DAYS! -- 62 Miles (Trenton, NJ to Newcastle, DE) and then 59 Miles (to Baltimore, MD)

After the first day's warm-up, we were old hats to being on our bikes all day.  Day three would be harder, though, what with the hills and the heat.

The Paul Puffenburger (sp?) story...

It seems that an MP from Fort Belvoir, VA was unable to get away from work to ride with us.  His co-workers showed him that he was not forgotten by checking him into the Jersey City Hyatt 5 times the first night and into the Trenton Hyatt 3 times the second night.  We thought this was funny (especially Randy and his roommate Greg).  So, we labelled the backs of our helmets with 'PUFFENBURGER' on day three.  We got a lot of laughs out of that -- Oh what fun!!  :O)

WE STAYED AT THE RAMADA INN ON THE THIRD NIGHT

After the second day of riding we were humbled by staying in a motel; all the other hotel guests and most of the employees seemed to be from the 65 and older crowd -- we were looking for the AARP convention, but there wasn't one to be found (hehehehe); the first two nights we had stayed in brand new, luxurious Hyatt Hotels in Jersey City and Trenton, NJ
SHE'S THE REAL MCCOY

I had arranged for chiropractors at the hotels each evening after each day's hard riding.  They were lined-up by Dr. Coralee Van Egmond of the International Chiropractic Association, headquartered in Ballston, Arlington, VA.  Everyone seemed to appreciate their services.

After day two of riding I was met by Dr. Heather McCoy at the Ramada Inn.  After she adjusted by arthritic neck (caused by a ceiling collapse in a house fire in 1984) and my back (several injuries over my 20+ years career in fire & rescue) I joked that she was the 'real McCoy'.  No, I didn't make any Dr. 'Bones' McCoy jokes...

Above she adjusts my arthritic wrist, which was aggravated by my rear brakes needing repair.  After I got them fixed, I didn't have to squeeze so hard to use them.   So, when I got to Baltimore after the third day of riding, my wrist didn't hurt as bad.

James 'Puffenburger' Fortner riding out from the Ramada on the third morning of the ride, eagerly awaiting the hill sets; James did well -- I was very proud of him!
Paul 'Puffenburger' Schomburg riding out of the Ramada on his way to the many hill sets; Paul ate up those hills!
AH THE HILLS

On day three they were great -- I got up to 37 mph coming down one of them  and then had to hit my brakes because people were in front of me (it's a good thing I got my rear brake cable replaced, as well as my pads); Paul got up to 40 mph on the big one!
Elizabeth 'Puffenburger' Saloom waves that she made it to the end of day three -- glad to be in Baltimore, MD; I would hit a hole pretty hard coming-in and bend my front rim  :O{
