![]() Here is some more information on Dale Jr.'s crew chief, Tony Eury, Sr.! Tony Eury, Sr., crew chief of the No. 8 Budweiser/Dale Earnhardt Inc. NASCAR Winston Cup team, has been working on race cars for more than 25 years -- long before Dale Earnhardt, Jr., was born. As a young man, Eury Sr. hoped to follow in his father's footsteps as a race car driver. When his dad took a trip to the beach one weekend, Eury got his chance behind the wheel of his father's car at a race in Concord, N.C., not far from his hometown of Kannapolis. Although he can't remember exactly where he finished, he's sure he brought the car back without a dent. Soon after his father allowed him to race regularly on dirt tracks in North Carolina and throughout the South. At the same time, Eury Sr. became friends with the Earnhardt family, who lived down the street. NASCAR legend Ralph Earnhardt built some of the engines that Eury Sr. and his father used in their race cars, and Eury Sr. began working part time on the cars of Earnhardt's son, Dale. During that time, Eury Sr. and Dale Earnhardt developed a close relationship that continues today. In 1985, Earnhardt offered Eury Sr. a job overseeing his NASCAR Busch Series race program with Dale Earnhardt Inc. (DEI). With the rigors of a full-time NASCAR Winston Cup schedule, Earnhardt knew he needed someone he could trust with day-to-day operations of his Busch Series team. Eury Sr. accepted the offer, and since then the Kannapolis connection has had tremendous success. In 1995, after Earnhardt retired from driving on the Busch Series to focus on his Winston Cup schedule, his DEI Busch Series team began running a full schedule with Eury Sr. leading the way. The team's first driver was Jeff Green, and in their first full season together, Eury Sr. and Green finished fifth in points. The following year, the duo moved up to third in the Busch Series standings. In 1997, Steve Park took over behind the wheel of the DEI Busch Series Chevrolet, recording three wins on his way to rookie of the year honors. After Park moved to the new DEI Winston Cup team in 1998, Eury Sr. was introduced to his fourth driver in five years, Earnhardt's son, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. It was old times for Eury Sr., who knew Earnhardt Jr. since he was born. Earnhardt Jr. and Eury Sr.'s son, Tony Eury, Jr., grew up together and remain close friends today. The rookie and the veteran clicked from the beginning like the days when Eury Sr. and Earnhardt Sr. raced together. The Eury/Earnhardt combination was dominant, winning 13 races and two consecutive Busch Series Championships. For 2000, Eury Sr. continues the family tradition, as he, Tony Jr. and Dale Jr. join forces once again to make a run at the NASCAR Winston Cup Series with DEI and Budweiser.
