Chapter 3 �All right, that should do for now,� Megumi said after she secured the brand new bandage on Sanosuke�s right hand. The two were sitting on stools directly across from one another while Megumi worked on his hand. She certainly didn�t show it, but touching his hand felt very�very different today. Without making serious eye contact with him, she moved to pack up the extra bandages after she released his hand. She turned around on her stool, opened the medicine cabinet and put the bandages back inside for the night. For some reason she had been feeling very nervous while bandaging that Rooster Head�s hand! The whole time she could feel his eyes on her. It was different than before. This time he seemed to be studying her intently, maybe even intensely waiting for her to meet his gaze. Out of the corner of her eye as she bandaged him, she could see the coaxing in his eyes. He had wanted her to look at him! Now she was nervous. What was he going to do now that they were finished? As she listened, he didn�t budge from the stool he was sitting on directly across from her. Now she had her back to him as she still faced the cabinet but normally he would get up, say thank you and be on his merry way. But this time he remained seated, probably still staring at her� Megumi swallowed a lump in her throat as the beating of her heart began to consume her body. He came here at night! She realized, but why�? �Megumi.� Just hearing him say her name caused a shock to jolt through her body. He not only startled her out of her thoughts, but the manner in which he said her name was�different. It wasn�t harsh. Perhaps it was actually�tender? �What is it, Sano?� she asked almost firmly, trying her hardest to cover up the fact that she was nervous. She sat up straight with her back to him and her eyes stared directly forward at the wall. �Megumi, look at me,� he said sincerely. Her eyes widened worriedly, and chills raced down her spine in response to what he said. She was honestly quite scared to look into his eyes, for she wasn�t sure what would happen if she did. Ever since she realized that Kenshin�s heart belonged to Kaoru, she found herself truly worrying about Sano�s safety whenever they all went off adventuring. Ever since their return, Megumi never acted right around him. They always fought like cats and dogs but she never imagined feeling a warm sensation in her heart during arguments� Now, he was candidly asking her to look at him. If she did, what then? What would she see? Would she completely lose control�? �Megumi�� This time it was a whisper in her ear! �Uhhhh!!� she gasped, her body freezing still almost in terror! At that moment she had crossed her arms and gripped them so tightly. She had been so lost in her own thoughts that she hadn�t even noticed him creep closer to her! His body was so near now from behind. He had slid his stool right up behind hers so that he could whisper into her ear� Megumi closed her eyes and let out a trembling sigh in response to the warmth of Sanosuke�s breath on the left side of her face. He was even closer than before�. Sanosuke half closed his eyes as he lightly began to nuzzle the left side of her head. His hands also came up to her arms and he grabbed them gently as if to loosen the tension. �Uhh�!� His touch caused her to gasp again, this time more heavily and perhaps even needy� This is when she recognized a deep arousal growing from the center of her being� Her breathing rate increased now, for she knew that there was no escape. She had to face this. �Megumi, why are you afraid of looking at me?� Sanosuke whispered huskily. The tremble in Megumi�s breathing became more vicious. Her eyes sparkled as each tender moment passed with him so close to her� �Because�,� Just as she began, she noticed his hand coming around to her face. She felt him place his hand delicately on her right cheek. Slowly, he began turning her face around� �Uhhh!� She couldn�t resist any longer. He had her cornered. She was going to see what she had been avoiding for weeks now. Once Sano had turned her around, he lifted her face upward with both hands as his fingers tenderly caressed her face. Now his gaze could no longer escape her� There it was. Megumi�s heart fluttered heavily as she finally looked up into the intensity of his eyes. Inside she saw the very fires of desire and passion within the affectionate twinkle that gazed back down at her. She was afraid of seeing such emotion. Those very feelings of desire and passion she had denied in herself for so long� Sano smiled a little at her, picking up on her affection for him, yet a nervousness was present there as well. He could understand those feelings, for he hadn�t allowed himself to be this close to a woman in ages. �You didn�t answer my question,� he teased tenderly. A tear fell down Megumi�s cheek that instant. His hand caught that tear. Sano�s eyes widened a little in concern, and his heart ached to see her cry. However she spoke before he had a chance to inquire. �I am afraid to look into your eyes because I�m afraid you�ll see how much I love you.� * * * �I�m a wanderer, Miss Kaoru. I must wander again,� Kenshin said� With a loud sigh, Kaoru slumped to the floor on her knees. Her arms fell to her sides and her hands pressed against the floor. She lowered her head as she struggled to fight tears that threatened to fall down her cheeks. Her lip quivered very slightly at the memory of Kenshin strolling away from her after he had made his decision to go to Kyoto� �Oh Kenshin�� she whispered aloud, �Will you leave again soon? Will you?� And at that moment she broke down, bending over and burying her face in her hands, crying helplessly. �Kenshin�� The thought of losing him struck a knife into her heart. She couldn�t bear the thought of him leaving after she had lost her father. She just couldn�t lose the second man who had come into her life. For a few moments, she allowed herself to cry, releasing the emotion she felt deep down over this situation. She literally felt like she had been carrying a burden inside her heart that she never shared with anyone. Well maybe it�s time to remedy that, said the inner voice of her conscience. At that thought, Kaoru straightened up a little, pushing herself back up into a sitting position. Her tears were drying a little as she seriously began to think about this some more. Okay. What if I told Kenshin the truth? She thought, the least I could do is share my feelings with him. And then if he doesn�t feel the same�he can go if he wishes. It was a hard thing for her to consider. More tears threatened to fall but she stopped them. She made a fist with one hand and stared straight ahead quite strongly. �Okay, I�m going to go find him!� �Find who?� said a tender, male voice. �Kenshin!� gasped Kaoru, whose eyes shot wide open. She was so startled that she jumped a little. She turned herself around to see the happy face of Kenshin Himura standing in the doorway of the dojo. Kaoru could feel a squeeze in her heart. A moment ago, she seemed to have spoken so strongly but now�she felt as if she would cry again. Was this�the moment where he would tell her farewell? �I�m sorry Miss Kaoru, did I scare you?� he asked cheerfully as he stepped inside the training hall. �Uh�,� Kaoru replied, almost embarrassed. She secretly hoped that he hadn�t seen her whole ordeal, �well�� �Miss Kaoru,� he said as he approached her. Feeling how close he was, Kaoru lifted her head up to look into his eyes. He seemed to be standing over her with a lot of confidence. When her eyes met his, she could sense something different about him. But what was it? His eyes twinkled down at her the way they usually did and he smiled very sweetly, but�something behind his gaze was different tonight. Was it because he was leaving? �Kenshin,� Kaoru said calmly, lowering her eyes a bit, �could we talk, please?� Kenshin�s smile spread bigger. He was secretly hoping she would ask that. He knelt down on his knees in front of her so that they sat face to face. Well, almost. With the smile still on his face, Kenshin lifted a finger to her chin. Kaoru gasped as an electric tingle burst inside her body. Her eyes widened too, for she did not expect him to touch her so tenderly. She also didn�t expect it to feel so good. Her insides gushed as Kenshin tilted her chin upward so that her eyes could meet his again. Kaoru�s heart rate increased as she looked into those beautiful violet eyes of his, which seemed to sparkle endlessly at her. What is he thinking? Kenshin continued to smile at her as his thumb stroked the front of her chin, below her lips.
