December Character Spotlight

Talen

Elenium/Tamuli

Sorry for not having a October or November spotlight. I'll try not to let this happen in the future.

Talen started out as the typical non-hero. He was introduced in The Diamond Throne as a dirty, grubby young thief, with no other hopes in life. For some time, Talen remains pictured (to most) as the son of a prostitute and some other immoral man. However, the ice begins to break after Talen repeatedly addresses Kurik as "father." When Kurik's indiscretion becomes widely known, everyone is much more civil to him, and he even receives an education from Berit. He is introduced to Flute, and becomes a friend to her (isn't everybody?) Talen becomes part of the most important parts of Sparhawk's team, with his quick-wittedness and stealth far outpacing most in Sparhawk's group.

When we see Talen in the Tamuli, he has grown up and entered adolescence. Talen becomes good friends with Danae, Sparhawk's daughter and an incarnation of Aphrael, by giving her a lost kitten he found. Danae insists they will get married when she becomes Queen of Elenia. We also see that Talen is actually going to become a Pandion Knight, which is shocking compared to what we saw in the Elenium. Talen shows one of the highest amounts of character development in both series. While many of the characters don't change at all, Talen has almost seemed to morph by the end of the Tamuli. One has to wonder though, did Talen ever marry Danae?
