Hiking to Snowbird Pass Day 2

Robson Pictures Day 1: Hike to Berg Lake Day 3: Toboggan Falls & Robson Pass Home Page

Mom and Dad rose early, had breakfast and decided that today they would hike up Snowbird Pass. Dad made sure that he had the fun of waking Tracey and I at some unreasonable hour (anytime before I am actually awake is an unreasonable hour). We caught up with them at the cabin and said we would catch up with them later on the hike up Snowbird Pass. We had a leisure breakfast, packed a lunch, filtered some water for the day and headed off.

We hiked along the valley to near the base of Robson Glacier. Then we headed up a rocky area, where the trail was often hard to see. We weaved our way up through the rocks to a ridge. The climbing was steep and we took breaks frequently. We spotted my parents ahead of us, but it took us another 2 hours to catch up to them.

At the top of the rock climb, we headed along a rocky ridge which paralleled Robson Glacier. The climbing was not too steep and much easier, but it didn't last long. Soon we headed up again on a steep incline. At the end of this next climb was a beautiful green meadow which was a nice change next to the barren rock we had been on.

Looking back at the valley and the bottom of Robson Glacier from the second steep pitch.

We had not realized that it would take us several hours to catch up to them, but we did catch up in time to have lunch together. After eating lunch I was feeling tired and said to Tracey that I had hiked far enough and would not be upset if she wanted to turn back. She was not tired enough and wanted to see what was over the next hill. Once I started hiking again and made it over the next hill, I wanted to make it to the top of the pass, but now Tracey wanted to turn back.

A beautiful valley on the way to Snowbird Pass. We caught up to my parents just over the next hill.

Lunch time. Look for the four marmots in the picture.

We met up with two men who my parents had visited with over their two day hike into Berg lake, and Tracey and I left the camp site about the same time as them. They had already made it to the top of Snowbird Pass and were on their way back down. Tracey decided to join them, so she would not be left alone anywhere, and I chose to continue to the top of the pass with my parents. It was well worth the trip.

Snowbird Pass is the saddle ahead. This is about where Tracey turned around to head back to camp.

The hike down was much faster, since I was then looking forward to dinner and my sleeping bag. Little did I know that Tracey and I would be sitting up and socializing with other campers until after 11:00 at night!

Just starting to hike down from Snowbird Pass. The back of Mount Robson can be seen in the distance.
