City Hall tower is topped by a thirty-seven foot statue of William Penn. The statue weighs some 27 tons, and claims to be the tallest statue on any building in the world. William Penn designated the site of City Hall, Center Square, as a place to build public buildings almost two-hundred years before construction began. The statue of Penn is by Alexander Milne Calder. Alexander Calder also created over two hundred and fifty sculptures that adorn the exterior and the seven hundred rooms in the complex.
