ADAM SANDLER

REVIEWS:

A former Saturday Night Live vet and one of the most notorious comedians of the 90s, Adam Sandler has also released four comedy related solo albums of humorous 'skits' and actual songs (parodies of various genres and/or artists.  I reviewed the second, What The Hell Happened To Me?, featured the popular holiday hit "The Chanukah Song".

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO ME? (1996)

(reviewed by Nick Karn)

Adam Sandler's second full length album is a hilariously entertaining and offensive 75 minute comedic journey featuring 20 tracks, including seven original songs.  The first, "Ode To My Car", isn't actually an ode at all - it's a hilarious and entertaining singable rant against his 'piece of shit car' with a great reggae feel, with every other word being an expletive.  "The Chanukah Song" is an acoustic number performed live that's an ode to a special holiday and famous celebrities mentioned by name in the song who celebrate it - quite charming.  "Steve Polychronopolous" is the posterchild song for the one person in life that no one can stand, and it's excellently performed in typical Sandler style.  "Crazy Love" is just that, a love song with somewhat strange lyrics that are downright conventional compared to "Dip Doodle", which is another fun live track - specifically, 'a song for all you grandmas out there' that has absolutely insane wordplay that sounds moronic on paper but works perfectly in the context of the song, while "Mr. Bake O" is your typical comedy number about getting completely drunk done in a nice touch by Sandler and the closing title track is an unexpectedly pleasant, nostalgic, lounge-ish number.

The skits, however, are what really make the album come alive - "The Goat" is the most humorous of these, chronicling the misadventures of three guys who meet a talking goat tied to a pickup truck, "Memory Lane" is a conversation between apparently those same three guys riding around in a car that takes an unexpected twist, "Sex Or Weight Lifting?" is an insanely perverted 'man on the street' interview conducted with a loony old guy and various people, "Respect" begins with 'little Timmy' telling his grandfather and his friends about his first day of school also done with a great twist, and "Do It For Your Mama" features a character creation done with the voice of Sandler that may make you sick to your stomach.  "Joining The Cult" and "The Adventures Of The Cow" are two other skits that turn out to be just as promising as their titles.  The only minor weaknesses of this strong and very recommended comedy effort are "The Hypnotist", which starts out amusing but gets old after awhile, and the "Excited Southerner" series interludes.

OVERALL RATING: 8
