About Me: Mary's Bio
Mary and Figgy taking a nap, summer 2006
This page is dedicated to my pets, and trust me, there are quite a few.  Please read about them below, and check out how cute they are!
THE CATS
These three think they run the house.  In a way, I suppose they do.
Figaro
PET BIO
NAME: Figaro
NICKNAMES: Fig, Figgy, Figaroid, Mini, Min
FAVORITE TREAT: fish fries!  She'll steal them right out of your hand
FAVORITE TOY: hair tie that she plays fetch with; also will wake you in the middle of the night crying to her toy
FAVORITE NAUGHTY THING TO DO: chase her brother around the house and bite his fur out
FAVORITE NICE THING TO DO: take care of her baby sister
BORN: late summer of 1993
Figaro doing kitty yoga, Feb. 2004
Figaro is the very first pet I ever had in my whole life!  I adopted her from the pet store in December of 1993, just a few months after I moved into my house.  I knew I wanted a cat, so I took my niece to the pet store (she was about 10 years old at the time), and I told her to wait by the front of the store while I went to get someone who worked there.  When I came back, my niece already had Figaro in her arms and said to me, "You should get her."  So basically, I didn't pick Figgy out, but my niece did a great job!  I love my Mini with all of my heart, and always will!
Spanky
PET BIO
NAME: Spanky
NICKNAMES: Poopsie, Moopsie, Moops, Sweet Pea, Ding Dong
FAVORITE TREAT: cheese (do not leave any dairy products unguarded with her around)
FAVORITE TOY: catnip sack
FAVORITE NAUGHTY THING TO DO: drag food scraps off your plate when you aren't looking and eat them behind the couch
FAVORITE NICE THING TO DO: mush people
BORN: August, 1994 (I was there when she was born!  I got her from my friend and former boss Dawn)
Poopsie taking a break from her hard life, Feb. 2004
Poor Poopsie.  She can never get enough love.  She will follow you around the house until you pick her up and carry her around like a baby.  She is very small for an adult cat-- she only weighs about 8 lbs.!  But don't be fooled by her size-- she is a true scrapper when she is in a fight (pretend fight, of course) with her brother or sister!  I think I took her from her Mommy when she was too young because she has always thought Figaro was her Mom!  Oh well, it's a good bond they have.
Doc
PET BIO
NAME: Doc
NICKNAMES: Buddy, Boy, Moo Moo, Moomies, Bad Doggie
FAVORITE TREAT: milk
FAVORITE TOY: favorite mice
FAVORITE NAUGHTY THING TO DO: mow down Mommy's plants
FAVORITE NICE THING TO DO: curl up and keep his parents warm
BORN: in a tree, West Virginia; Aug. 1998
Buddy watching birdies out the window, Feb. 2004
Poor Buddy.  He was brought into a house of all females, and expected to sink or swim.  Nate got Moo Moo when he was attending college in West Virginia.  A friend found him up in a tree, so we think he is part bird.  Finally, he does get along with his sisters, but he does like to torture them on a regular basis.  He is the most vocal of all our cats, and isn't afraid of visitors.  He also like to break house rules by sitting on the kitchen table and watching birdies out the window.  He does not like to be held, unless you are his Mom.  Then he loves it.  (HA!  Yeah right!)
THE REPTILES
Leopard Geckos
Oscar
Lego
This is a picture of Lego.  He isn't the most photogenic lizard we have, as you can tell.  He doesn't have a bio because all he really likes to do is sleep, eat crickets, and run away from his Mom.  I got him from a former student of mine for a wedding gift in July of 2002.
Oscar got his name from being a little on the grouchy side.  Poor lil guy though-- he cannot see out of his left eye!  He does respond to his Mom's voice though, and that's why he looks so cute in this picture!  He has identical hobbies to his brother Lego.  I also got him from the same former student.
The photograph you are seeing at left is nothing shy of a miracle.  Carmine rarely comes out from under his red plastic plant when I am in the room.  This does not mean he doesn't like his Mom.  When he tries to bite me, that doesn't mean he doesn't like me either.  He is just expressing himself, that's all.  :)  Actually, he loves to burrow under Figaro when I take him out of his tank.  Figaro doesn't mind either, believe it or not!  Carmine started his life at our house on Mother's Day, 2003.  He had a little "sibling" too, but Tea Time Turtle died.  :(  In liu of TTT's death, I decided to change Slinky's name to Carmine because I didn't like the silly name.  What kind of name is Slinky for a turtle?!  Carmine is much better, don't you think?  (Nate doesn't think so-- Slinky is a brand of strings he uses on his guitar.  But that's OK because in my grief, Nate accepted that there was nothing he could do about me changing Carmine's name.  So that's that.)

Corn Snake
This is Cookie the corn snake, and I like to sing to him.  I sing, "Cookie Cookie!  He's my snakey!"  However, I am not exactly sure if Cookie is a "he" or a "she."  That is yet to be determined.  When we first got Cookie, in October of 2005, (s)he was very small, probably about the width and length of a brand new pencil.  Now, Cookie is a fat pig.  He's about 2 feet long, and about as thick as a Crayola marker.  He loves his Mom very much and is quite calm around me.  However, when his Dad picks him up, he is a little cuckoo sometimes.  By the way, this photo was taken when he was much smaller.

SMALL MAMMALS
Deer Mouse
Albino Lab Mouse
This is Teeni Wahini.  He was caught by Nate's boss in a Hav-A-Hart trap in the fall of 2005.  Nate's boss brought him in to work, and Nate brought him home to "show" me.  HA!  He knows better-- any animal that comes into our house ends up living here for the rest of its life.  (I think he knew that. . .)  Anyway, we can't take Teen out or play with him because Teen can jump about 2 feet in the air and we will never catch him again.  So Teen lives in his 10 gallon aquarium and runs all night on his wheel.  Oh, and he also loves to eat green grapes.  He's crazy about them!
Meet Mrs. Jingles.  She is CRAZY.  She has a wheel; she runs against the outside of it instead of around the inside of it.  She has a nice hut with a thatched roof; she eats it.  Yes, she eats the house.  She is totally crazy.  Nate saved her from his lab; she was set to be put to sleep, but she was too nice.  Not bitey at all!  So even though she escaped from her hamster cage, we are keeping her in a 10 gallon aquarium so she can be crazy for a few more years.  **UPDATE** Mrs. Jingles died in Jan. 2007.  I think something was neurologically wrong with her.  We will bury her in the garden with Ratty this spring.  :(
ROSY-HAIRED TARANTULA
I know everyone is very excited to meet Charlotte, our rosy-haired tarantula!  A student at HCCC had her as a pet, but his Mom wouldn't let him bring her home.  So he donated her to the college, and Nate brought her home.  Why, I don't know, because he's scared of her.  But don't worry-- I take very good care of her, even  though she's a little scary sometimes!
Please be sure to sign my guestbook before you leave!  I read each and every comment, you know, and I keep all the good ones.  :)
