Back to the basis. In the beginning we, The SCA, did have a combat tourney and did grant that winner the boon of crowning his lady "Queen of Love for the day". I have seen the pics from Diana Listmaker's party(and you think fashons from the 70's are weird!). But the main thrust of the party, other than as a going away party for those leaving for the peace corp, was doing it right. Researching the ways, means and cultural backgound. So it is that we honor three tiers of skill equally. But there is eqaul and there is equal. Combat specialists can only advance so far without the arts. To advance to Knighthood, you MUST know some skills artistic(IE: Dance). But you need not know combat in order to rise as a Peer of the Realm in The Arts. Indeed many Companions of the Laural speak more to the core of the Society than any Knight. In light of that, our many groups have artistic competitions as well as combat. And because our roots grow deep, The Arts are not only found in competition but in the pleasure we take in our activities, both at events and in our homes. Hear are pictures of a harp owned by a good friend of mine and minstrel as well as the Baronial thrones of Barony Settmour Swamp. Such treasures and more do we adorn our pasttime with even as those we study adorned their lives.
