Chemical Engineering (CHE 4)

Taira as Mr. Rafael and Mrs. Adoracion Echalico calls her is a fourth year Bachelor of Chemical Engineering student at Mapua Institute of Technology (Philippines). She discovered her talent in singing when she was 7. Taira actively participated in her high school resident choir called the NEOGENES. The NEOGENES developed her talent and she is thankful for that.

In 1994 she performed with the Introvoys, her first engagement to concert singing. Altair loves so much to play the piano but never had the chance to fully concentrate due to her studies but she still finished grade 1 piano lessons. She became a member of the San Isidro Labrador Choir and occasionally sings with the Immaculate Conception Parish Grand Choir. She also had her experiences of winning in singing competitions and singing in a musical play in Bulacan. She is the S-1 soloist of MSA. She is fond of listening to classical music and a little of pop, R&B, rock and a lot of instrumental music. One of her favorites is Beethoven. Now she is trying to self-study solo acoustic guitar playing.

songs are my soul I love singing by heart the more I love it when Im with the Mapua Institute Technology Concert Singers, with all my heart and mind.

At present, Altair devotes her full singing career with the MITCS. Shes into chorale singing for 10 years now.

On my own, pretending hes beside me these beautiful words from Les Miserables would always remind us of a lady so simple, so gentle, so feminine, so quiet and yet, inside her lies a voice so sweet and so angelic that would make anybody stop, listen, imagine and think on how great and powerful God really is for making such a creation with so much beauty both in personality and in voice. The MITCS is blessed to have a power soprano who sings not only to share her talent but also to bring back all the glory and praises to God.

Her course, Chemical Engineering did not become a barrier in fulfilling her dreams and plans of exploring her world in music. She has received a bunch of awards in her singing career but never did she stop in striving for more.

There is always a bright future awaiting this young lady. Everyone who has known her would agree that her gift of song is truly a treasure only she can claim her own.

The ability to sing, mimic tunes and dance has been evident with this girl when she was still very young. Her sudden burst into song while playing or eating was considered as a funny yet inspiring moment. Born from two arts oriented families, it was not surprising that this girl has been able to perform and sing just like those before her.

Sharlynns first ever-musical instruction came about when she was 8 years old at the Ryan Cayabyab Music Studio in Makati. Being very young, she didnt take these lessons as seriously as one who would take it in their teen years. This instruction however made her understand the correct breathing, posture, and proper vocalization. She was even introduced to singing Broadway hits. After which two more vocal coaches then followed for two different singing competitions where she emerge champion. Discipline and persistence where taught there specially singing even when she felt that she couldnt. Morning, afternoon or evening were the schedules given her then. These trainings lasted for months, ending with victories from both contests.

Since then Sharlynn has been performing in musicals, acting in theatres (lead in Miss Saigon and Sound of Music in high school, and as Les Miserables Eponine last year 2001) and trying chorale singing. Now joining the MIT Concert Singers, she feels as though this was another challenge to take. It has been almost three years since she joined the group, and with the growth shed been in, she is very proud of her musical achievements and will continue to perform and share these talents given her to anyone whod care to listen.

Emerlyns first taste of chorale singing was when she joined the school choir when she was still in elementary. She has also joined the church choir in Bucandala Imus, Cavite when she was a freshman in high school.

She has also participated in school programs by singing her favorite songs. She joined a campus singing competition during their Foundation day and won first prize for her rendition of the song Colors of the Wind.

On her sophomore year in Mapua she auditioned for the MIT Concert Singers and was accepted. She joins the group singing as Soprano 2. Shortly after, Sister Garcia (her choir adviser at St. Augustine) invited her to join the St. Augustine Church Choir in Lagro.

Juggling her schedules for her studies and the two chorales, she isnt fazed with the big responsibilities but rather is motivated to do better. Emerlyn is also one of the MIT Sponsors and has worked as a Student Assistant in recent semesters.
