Carl Gemino, 64, the former co-owner of Gem Manufacturing in Waterbury, stood in New Britain Superior Court in front of friends and family Wednesday, saying he was disgusted and appalled at his behavior. He stood reading from a prepared statement, hand in his pocket, pausing to compose himself. "I stand before you ashamed and contrite," Gemino said. According to his attorney, and friends who spoke before he was sentenced, Gemino suffered from bleeding in the brain that was discovered in 2004. Judge Joan K. Alexander factored that medical condition into the sentence, saying the bleeding contributed to his uninhibited, impulsive behavior.
