I started as a copy editor on the financial desk, was promoted to chief
copy editor, then night financial editor, then editor of the weekly personal-finance
section, The Money Report. All along, I also wrote for the paper. In 1997,
I took the Money Report from Paris to New York, where I was also the paper's
correspondent. In 1999, we added a television operation, and I did a daily
five-minute broadcast wrapping up U.S. financial news. Editing the Money
Report included assigning to and editing articles from a global network of
freelancers, as well as designing the section. For production reasons, the
Money Report returned to Paris in April 2002, and the New York positions
were terminated for financial reasons in August and October 2002.

this on a year's leave of absence from the International Herald Tribune, which
was taken for family reasons.

My degree is in history. I also was the managing editor of the school paper,
the Columbia Daily Spectator, and its production manager in my sixth and seventh
semesters, and I had other jobs on staff in my six other semesters. I also
held a work-study job for the entire four years, except for the summer of
1978, when I co-edited the weekly summer edition of the paper. Over the summers,
I took courses at the Graduate School of Journalism in Mass Communication,
News Editing, Photojournalism, and Science Reporting.

The Black Rock Beacon
I am a founder, the first president and the first editor of the Black Rock Beacon, an independent, not-for-profit newspaper and website for the Burning Man Community (2005-present). I was the editor of the Black Rock Gazette, the official daily newspaper of Burning Man in 2002, and a managing editor in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2004.
