| What is considered as being "important data" ? Let's proceed this way, let's check for your : - personal text files, Word and Excel files, your resume, anything you wrote down and that you don't want to lose really. - everything you got off CDs and the Internet, and that you don't have on CDs any longer : MP3s, Videos, Games, Software, Games.... - your Internet favorites : quite important, and easy to forget ! Under Win 98, they're located in the c:/windows/favorites folder. Just copy and paste them to your selected backup device, but if you're going to burn them with Nero especially, better zip the whole folder (because of the lengh limitation of the file names, Internet favorites can have very long names !) - your emails : if you have Outlook, open the program, go to Tools, Options and choose the Maintenance tab. You will see a "storage folder" button, click on it, and the path for your storage folder will apear. Copy this link and paste this link to a Windows address bar (double-click on My Computer, and paste the link in the field where you can see My Computer displayed). This will bring you to that folder. Copy all .dbx files you see, and move them to your backup device (another partition, a disk etc....), keep them in a folder created for that matter, like Outlook Backup or Emails or whatever. Now you also need to save your address book, in order to do that, in Outlook, click on File, Export, Address Book, and choose "Text File with commas", you will save this file in the same folder where you copied/pasted your .dbx files just before. - your game saves : yeah why not...=) Try to find those files in your game directories, it's different each time, so I won't help you much there. - all your preferences : if it took you a long time to set up some of your programs, you should save some .ini files, which, for the most part, contain all your preferences. If you have an FTP server for exemple, using Serv-U, you can save the few .ini files you see in your Serv-U folder (/program files/serv-u). Those files contain the directory access and rules for each user, their encrypted password etc... You see what I'm talking about, if you have any other programs that need a long setup time and if you can find the corresponding .ini files, better save them all (in a folder created just for them, for better access, as usual) drivers ! internet connection parameters ! start-up disk ! |
