REGIONAL HAPPENINGS
Missouri Regional Picnic

For weeks the anticipation built as we all waited for the upcoming Regional picnic. What added to our heightened senses was the worry about all the rain we were having as week after week passed. Would we get rained out? After all for the majority of us, the word picnic conjures images of mouth-watering aromas wafting across the air to tantalize your senses and make your stomach rumble with the anticipation of the first bite. The hot drowsy sunshine as we fill our stomachs, and stretch our legs before us to let it all settle. Soon the sounds of laughter fills the air from the children as they rush around playing games, as the adults sit around talking with each other. A smell of grass as it is heated by the sun, the sight of a kite dancing in the sky being held earthbound only by the sweaty hands of a child.

Suddenly the weatherman appears and as if possessed by an evil genie who wishes only to pull out a pin to burst ones image of the perfect sunny picnic day. The dreaded word rain comes from his lips, not just once but over and over again as if he is shouting in an echo chamber. NO!!, you shout, as if by doing so it can ward off this evil omen. With each passing day you reach for your TV remote with trepidation, hoping against hope that the weatherman will say, Just kidding folks, we are going to have a beautiful day Sunday. Yet, the weatherman persists in tormenting us with his gloomy forecasts.

Those who are the master planners scramble to keep ahead of the ever-changing forecast that seems determined to drive them mad. Plan A, becomes Plan B, and then back to Plan A. Then the day dawns with SUNSHINE!! Will it hold? Silent prayers are sent heavenward that it will remain until after 6:00 p.m. Before long cars begin winding their way around the campus grounds as they find their way to the Campus Center. The sounds of laughter soon fill the air as old friends greet one another again. Before long one can see the men hefting the heavy grill out of their truck, and setting it up on the patio in preparation for the feast. The women are helping each other to set up the food, tables, and games for all to enjoy.
