Billy Budd is the main character in the novel bearing his name. It tells about his life on board a British Merchant ship and then a ship of the line in the early 19th century. Billy Budd was orphaned as a child and found hanging on the door of a gentleman. He is approximately 21 years of age when the book takes place. Budd is an extremely likable character who is blessed with good looks and a disarming personality. Like all characters, Billy has his faults. He is both illiterate and suffers from stutters when he is nervous.
