Mini-Lesson on Citing Internet Information
This lesson will come immediatley after the How-To Do an Online Search Lesson.
Time Needed: 30 Minutes
Instructional Presentation:
1. I will explain that we are
going to talk about using information off the internet in our own
personal papers and presentations. I will explain that it is very
important to tell exactly which websites and people give us infomation
for each project. I will explain that if we borrow information
without telling where we got it that we are stealing and commiting a
crime.
2. We will head to the computer
lab and once again search for our designated animal. I will ask
the students to recall how we cited information last time (we just
listed internet addresses). I will explain that this is an
accepted and common way of referencing, but when writing a paper or
something else formal, we must do things a little differently.
3. I will write the formula on the board.....
( Title of Website. Editor's Name. Year
Created. Date Viewed. Website address. )
and give an example......Bartleby.com: Great Books Online. Ed. Steven van Leeuwen. 2002. 5 May 2002 <http://www.bartleby.com/>.
4. We will practice with
websites that we found for our animal facts. I will walk around
and help students locate each piece of information. I will ask
them to cite five websites of their own choosing.
5. We will discuss why
this is important once again and review what pieces of information
should be included. We will also talk briefly about using
internet photos and review why and when we should use these techniques.
Assessment:
This is an instructional lesson, so I will be assessing the sheets to
see that each website has been cited correctly. I will also
monitor the students as they work.
