YOU are the most important person who will help your child succeed.
Many parents ask; "How can I help my child at home?"
Here are a few tips and websites that will help you work with your child.
This page is designed to include "tips" and helpful websites.  To find specific activities to practice, check out the "Home Practice" link on the home webpage.

* Reading enjoyment begins at home! Set aside 15 minutes a day for reading.  This can be your child reading to you OR you reading to your child.

* Create a special reading area in your child's room.  Put a special pillow or stuffed animal in this area.  Make sure the area has good lighting.  Have books available for your child in this cozy area.  Remember to check out your local library to bring home new and interesting books.

* Take time for you to read for pleasure!  Children learn through example and if your child sees you reading for fun, he/she will want to join as well.

* The best readers practice, practice, practice!  Practice includes being read to by someone else, reading aloud, and reading silently.

* Encourage your child by saying statements like:
"I like the way you worked that out."
"You can do it!"
"Great job!"
"Try your best!"
"I am proud of you."

*When your child is stuck on a word, do not tell them the word immediately.
First try questions and statements like this:
"What sound does that word begin with?"
"Can the picture help us figure out that word?"
"Take your time."
"Go back and read this again.  What word would make sense?"

* Be EXCITED for your child!!  Your child had a very busy and exciting day at school.  Although you are very tired at the end of a long work day, it is important for your child to share what happened to them.  They want to share and want to feel that you are interested in the same things.  Take at least 5 to 10 minutes each day to find out what happened at school.
