Judo was founded in the early 1880s by Dr.Jigoro Kano who due to his small frame as a boy was often on the other end of abuse and taunts by other boys his age. It was because of this he decided to take up the art of Ju-Jitsu.

After studying Ju-Jitsu for many years, Kano decided that he would devise an art that eliminated the risks of any danger from kicks and hand strikes while training. Kano had the ability to sort out very quickly the central elements and principles that make techniques and sequences successful. This enabled him to grasp the teachings of the various Ju-Jitsu schools very quickly. He took the grappling and throwing techniques and refined them and called this new art Judo - 'Ju' meaning gentle and 'do' meaning the way.
