LEADERSHIP SUMMARY
There has been plenty of research done on leadership, all contributing to the theories and ideas of what makes good leadership. It does not seem to be an area of study with definite answers, but if the principles and guidelines are kept in mind, then learning to be a better leader is highly probable.
Flexibility is the key to becoming a great leader. By deciding what approach is necessary and adapting the style displayed. Great leaders need to adapt based upon the objectives, needs of group members, and situational factors. Everett Dirksen, a US Congressman and Senator, proclaimed I am a man of fixed and unbending principles, the first of which is to be flexible at all times. (Lewis, 2006)
From developing this website we have learnt that you dont have to adopt one particular style of leadership in order to be successful. In fact having the ability to be flexible depending on the individual situation and the team you are leading is most important. We have studied numerous leaders including the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, Gordon Ramsay, Fred Hollows and numerous local leaders in our community. Here we have seen many different styles of leadership yet they all are successful in achieving their goals and leading their people. This is consistent with the theory set out in (Dubrin et al, 2006 page 81) that there is no one most effective leadership style and instead leaders must adopt several. |
