| The following information was sourced from (A. Malone, personal communication, April 21, 2008).
BACKGROUND Annie Malone was born in Capel, Western Australia and was brought up on a dairy farm. Her first career, as an office worker, lasted one year after completing an administration course at TAFE. At that time she had little in the way of career aspirations so she jetted off overseas to India for two months. Annie then travelled around Australia before settling back to the South West at the age of 22. Upon her return, Annie bought a clothing business called Karma Villa, which specialised in screen-printing. In 1983, aged 25 Annie entered into business with Katrina Bogdanoff at Good Earths vegetarian caf - The Naturally Good Caf. In 1989, The Natural Temptation Caf was established at Bunbury Centrepoint. Annie and Katrina realised that in order to stay competitive they would have to run parallel with their competitors. The shopping centre would be a convenient location for customers and they considered themselves as having a clear advantage with their meals being freshly prepared on site. The caf was initially started with a view to selling it after a couple of years. However, in 1990 Annie and Katrina decided to split the business with Annie taking over The Natural Temptation Caf and Katrina staying with The Naturally Good Cafe. Since 1990, The Natural Temptation Caf has grown in popularity and as such, there have been extensions and improvements to keep up with business growth. LEADERSHIP Annie defines a leader as a person who delegates, is not afraid to make prompt decisions, is organised, gives team confidence, is relied upon and is comfortable being in control. Annie does not acknowledge herself as a local leader however; she defines her leadership as leading by example. She views her leadership style as democratic as she discusses day-to-day matters with staff and enjoys getting her staffs opinions. Annie considers natural leaders are born and not developed. She believes some people are naturally better at leading others. Annie sees her strengths as being positive, enthusiastic, being able to organise staff, striving for excellence and enjoyment of challenges. She perceives her weaknesses as tackling too much, not delegating or sharing responsibility enough and not being able to stand back and take more of an observational role. 10 LAWS OF LEADERSHIP as set out in Lecture 4 of MAN3121 Leadership III. Vision Annies vision has changed from just operating a caf for two years to her current vision of providing good quality vegetarian food in a commercial market without comprising quality. Her outlook has not changed and she has maintained standards through the growth of her business. Her objective is to continue this level of service to a growing market. Annie revisits her goals every couple of years and portrays her vision through her cookbooks and newsletters, which are available for viewing and/or purchase at her caf. She is currently taking this one-step further by starting a marketing campaign and establishing a website called www.naturaltemptation.com.au. Discipline Annie is self-disciplined and portrays this through being a workaholic and her continual striving for excellence. She wants to become more disciplined behind the scenes and improve her time management skills. Annie encourages discipline with staff by undertaking staff evaluations every six months and training staff every three weeks until standards are met. All staff have a clear understanding of expected standards and behaviour. Wisdom Annie has improved her leadership skills through trial and error and experiences such as her involvement in small business, expansion and growth of the caf, intuitiveness and developing more of an organiser role. Annie has undertaken a 6-month course in business, which served as a reinforcement of her knowledge in managing people. One learnt experience is that when it comes to finding staff, she analyses whether the person is suited for the position, rather than choosing someone she has to mould. Annie shares her knowledge of food through her cookbooks and encourages staff discussions and debates about food. She offers staff discounts and encourages them to sample food in order that they can understand and promote the menu. Courage Some of the challenges Annie has experienced are related to staff and the expansion of the caf. Annies challenges with staff include choosing the right people and learning how to lead different generations. The challenge is to find the right balance of flexibility to enable you to encourage and motivate without giving so much flexibility that staff will digress from the cafs goals. Annies challenges with expansion of the caf relate to extensions four years ago. The first extension created an area for food preparation and the second created more table seating. One of the challenges was having the caf closed for four days. Annie professes a key quality when facing challenges is having a sense of humour. Humility Annie has great culinary skills however understands that you can never stop learning. Annie compares herself with other industry leaders by reading their stories and finds comfort in knowing that these leaders are experiencing the same anxiety and concerns. She tries to learn from these leaders by gaining ideas and looking at their cafes, cookbooks, menus, interior designs and systems to see if it would benefit her caf. Decision Maker Annie believes when making decisions you should make the decision, act on it and not over analyse. She ensures decisions made align with her vision and goals. At times Annie has turned down certain types of catering as it was outside the scope of her vision and goals. Annie likes to share information and provide staff with a sense of ownership by giving them an opportunity to express their thoughts. She makes the final decision however; by asking staff opinions, she is able to get feedback of her own ideas and intuition. Annie prefers this style, as she does not want to be autocratic. Annie delegates decisions to staff on day-to-day matters and allows her elected supervisors to undertake training, staff evaluations, and customer complaints. Develops Friendships Since opening the caf, Annie has developed friendships through her customers and staff. Her customers give her support, drive and purpose in continuing the business. Exercises Tact and Diplomacy Annie makes no comprise for food and only uses top quality products including free-range chicken. She wants to attract non-vegetarians to eat at her caf and for them to leave with a good impression that healthy food tastes good. Annies charity works include World Vision through child sponsorship and the leprosy foundation New Hope India Relief. Five percent of profits from Annies cookbooks support New Hope - which helps kids with leprosy become self sufficient by creating their own industries. Annie promotes kids sport and healthy eating through sponsorship of kids triathlons at the Runners Club. Often these kids will eat at her caf in order to be exposed to healthier eating at an early age and for them to realise healthy food tastes good, is not odd and is easily accessible by its location at Bunbury Centrepoint. Develops Executive Ability Annie has developed her culinary skills from experiences such as cooking from home, her experience in India, her period at The Naturally Good Caf, researching cookbooks, customer trials, seasonal influences, sense of sight, smell and taste and a feeling for what customers want. Annie has received no formal accolades but has received many customer accolades. Inspirational Power Annie was inspired by hospitality at a young age with early exposure to cooking at home. Her experience in travelling to India has had a great influence in becoming alternate. Annies inspiration comes from food. She gets enjoyment out of producing a product and being able to put her name to it. Individuals that have been a role model or inspirational influence are her mother by her hard work, decision making and work ethic and Anita Roddick, founder of the Body Shop. Other individual influences have come from reading autobiographies of leaders from different industries. Annie has become an inspiration to other people by her enthusiastic and fun personality and through her caf and cookbooks. She has a great relationship with staff and enjoys being portrayed as a nice and interesting person. She has even inspired some staff and customers to open up their own cafes. Her passion for food has rubbed off on customers with many customers asking for recipes, which has been one of the driving forces behind her cookbooks. With her cookbooks and exotic naming of foods, Annie likes to take readers and customers on a journey to different countries through visualisation, illustrations, poems and stories. CONCLUSION I have chosen Annie Malone, as I believe she is a great local leader. Her passion, vision, experience and knowledge has formed The Natural Temptation Caf. Annie is inspired about food and shares her knowledge and passion with others. Her vision is not constrained to mere business profits but to the whole community in the promotion of healthy eating. She is not only a local leader but also an industry leader through her hard work and determination in an ever-growing market for alternate foods. Annie challenges us to think more about the food we eat and leaves customers with a sense of fulfilment. |
