Tips for the Adventurer
Roughing it Out

It's summer! It's the perfect time for fun and adventure. If you're heading far off the beaten track, your travel can be a nightmare without precautions. Here are some basic travel advice for adventure travelers:
Contributed by : Mike Gomez

Swiss Knife It is ALWAYS a good idea to take along your trusty old Victorinox Swiss knife.

Another handy thing to take along is a 50 or 75-watt 220V bulb which you can switch for the 5-watt bulb some cheap hostels provide your room with - in an attempt to save on their electric bill.

Take along power outlet adaptors (round to flat, etc.) so you can use your radio, charge your batteries, etc., in your room -- no matter what kind of wall outlet you find in it. .

When you take photos of people, take down their names and addresses, and PLEASE PLEASE do not fail to send them a copy of their photo as you promise them you would.

Bring your own bottled water (a reputable brand with an intact serrated seal) -- a sufficient supply if you plan to go to a "not-so-urbanized" area such as the mountains.

Bring essential medication such as cold and flu tablets, paracetamol, treatment for diarrhea (Imodium or Lomotil), and antiseptic for cuts and grazes. Remember that traveler's diarrhea is among the most common ailments on the road.

Don't forget to bring an insect repellant, sunscreen, and chapstick.

Avoid eating raw produce that is neither cooked nor peelable (like lettuce), shellfish such as mussels, oysters and clams, as well as undercooked meat.

Avoid drinks with ice, unless the ice has been properly treated. Be wary of fruit drinks where water may have been added. Anything carbonated is safe to drink, until you add ice.
