| After a disappointing end to the first ever JV league from Little Caesars in the 2001-2002 season, teams knew that changes had to be made. Teams with an affliation to their school were limited to 24 games that they could play, whereas teams that were an association team but carried the school's name could play up to 60 games in a year. So in the spring of 2002, there was an idea for a league that would feature "non-varsity" (i.e. JV, Varsity 'B') high school teams, and would follow all the rules of the Michigan High School Athletic Association. That league is now known as the Michigan Interscholastic Prep Hockey League. The MIPHL was founded in part by Cranbrook/Kingswood varsity head coach, Andy Weidenbach, and is represented by eight teams: Cranbrook/Kingswood, Brother Rice, Harper Woods Notre Dame, Royal Oak, Orchard Lake St. Mary's, Notre Dame Prep, University of Detroit, and Grosse Pointe University of Liggett. The purpose of the MIPHL is to promote a higher level of disciplined hockey in conjuction with academic excellence for schools that desire to provide a secondary squad to their Varsity team. Each team plays a total of 26 games from Mid-November to the end of February. The break down is as follows: 2 Preseason Scrimmages 14 League Games 8 Non-League Games 2 Playoff Games At the conclusion of the regular season, the teams will be seeded #1-#8 based on their record and play two playoff games. The brackets for the first playoff games will look like this: Game 1 - #8 vs #5 on Thursday @ City Sports Game 2 - #7 vs #6 on Thursday @ City Sports Game 3 - #4 vs #1 on Friday @ City Sports Game 4 - #3 vs #2 on Friday @ City Sports All remaining games will be played at Cranbrook.
