Stage 1: the easy bit-driving through the European Union.
17:30 30th  July
I receive a one-word  text message - Dover!
13:00 30th July
A full report from the launch event in Hyde Park can be seen by clicking here, including lots of photographs and an  account  for how  the Morris Minor has already won a prize!
18:00 31st July
A flurry of text messages indicates that Steve and Bill are making steady progress across Europe: at 06:50 they are in Cologne;  08:13 in Germany heading for Koblenz, then followed shortly after by fuel still leaking. At 17:42, they are nearing Czech border. They are doing much better than the Reliant Robin team who according to their website, have abandoned their car in a lay-by just outside Calais for the night.

20:46 31st July
A worrying development: Steve & Bill are travelling in convoy with some friends, and one  of the cars, a jeep, has suffered a broken gearbox. They haven't crossed the Czech border yet, and will see what the morning brings.
23:45 1st  August
No progress today: Steve and Bill stayed in  Trostau last night, not far from the Czech border, they spent today in the forest eating blackberries after sausage and  beer last night. Off to Prague tomorrow.
23:45 2nd August
Recent events have caused a change of plan, forcing the team to proceed via Kiev rather than te Baltic States and Moscow. At 10:50 we are told: On our way. Again. Some concern that exhaust on morris is broken and woodwork is crumbling. The accompanying jeep has ailments described as a fuel filter...full of crap and a grommit missing in jeep carb. However this does not stop them and the following sub-Baedeker's guide to the beautiful city of Prague is received at 19:27 Arrived bohemian bagel. Check point prague. Going to eat. No time to sight see. Shame looks nice place. So will head on to close to polish border.
23:30 3rd August
Latest reports indicate that the Traveller is now approaching the Ukrainian border, having passed the 1000-mile mark earlier in the day. They have passed through Krakow, and have visited a bizarre church of skulls, which appears to be featured on this Polish language website.
23:30 4th August
At one point today I was composing a valedictory statement- perhaps the Church of skulls had cursed the Morris: the first text message of the day announced depressingly that the gear box appeared to have irretrievably  broken down. Hopes were raised at lunchtime as over a telephone conference, we looked into the possibility of flying out a replacement  gear box from Colchester to Krakow, although buying a second-hand Lada in Poland might have been a a cheaper alternative. However, shortly after 8 pm some good news is nervously, if triumphantly texted: we are assured that polish ingenuity has fixed our broken gear selector. The dream lives on! On to Ukraine and beyond!  Full text of  texts is here.
