Visitors Information

Gove Region

Gove is the name of the region located on the north eastern tip of Arnhemland.  Nhulunbuy, is the name of the major town in the Gove region with a population of approx. 3500. The Gove Yacht Club is located 13kms from Nhulunbuy. Driving in & out of Gove is restricted to the mid-late dry season and although possible in early July, it is definately not guaranteed. Gove airport is located approximately 15kms from Nhulunbuy and has a regular bus service. Qantas and Flight West airline services from Darwin arrive in Gove every morning and return each afternoon to Darwin. There are no other commercial flight options available.

Background – Gove Yacht Club

The Gove Yacht Club is located on Inverell bay near the Nabalco Alumina Refinery, about 13kms from Nhulunbuy.  Facilities are similar to the Darwin Sailing Club but on a smaller scale. The club has a bar and galley, and offers a similar scene to the DSC with indoor and outdoor seating arrangements to take in the view. The club offers BBQ areas and a Junior clubhouse. A lockable 12m x 6m sailing shed located just above the high water mark is used to store dinghies and equipment. A lockable boat storage compound area is also available with access to the beach via a gate.  There is NO chandlery at the club and only limited supplies are available in town.

The Perkins barge ‘Francis Bay’ arrives from Darwin each Sunday PM unloading Monday AM and equipment is usually available from the Tuesday. The ‘Francis Bay’ returns to Darwin on Wednesday and Perkins require loads to be at the depot on the Sunday PM or Monday AM.

Meals are available at the club and lunch orders can be radioed in from the spectator vessel.

Weather & Accommodation

Weather for July is that of typical dry season being consistent SE winds ranging 10-15kn. Tides range typically  from about 1.5 – 3.5 m. The distance to the start would be typically about 1-2nm and will be similar to Darwin. Dangers in and on the water are also similar to Darwin.

There are 2 Motels in Nhulunbuy, the Walkabout Resort and the Gove Peninsular Motel. Camping at the GYC is not allowed due to lease restrictions. Gove Yacht Club families are very happy to offer billeting to visiting sailors and families.
