History


 

The Mini appears in 1957 by the hand of Sir Alec Issigonis, his objective was to create a car of four places with small dimensions. To get more space, the engine was placed in a transversal position in relation with the axis of the automobile. By this way, the height and the dimensions were more smaller, and with engines of 1000, 1275 and 1300 c.c. the car proved to be very useful. Mini Cooper in race!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Although the shape of the suspension were idealizated initially in rubber, but latter in Hydrolostic, and the felleo were only of ten inchs, allowed that this elements don't use so many space like the other cars of the epoch. And the way how the small dwelling was built allowed to the people that use the car felt in an automobile of biggest dimensions. All this things make this car very funny, economic and a "legend" in the history of the automobile!

Some important dates to the history of the Mini:

 

1957

Due the request of Leonard Lord to Sir Alec Issigonis to built a car of smaller dimensions (3.6 m) but at the level of others of greater dimensions, it borns the Mini. The first car goes out in the 8th of May.

1959

In the 26th of August of 1959 the Mini was presented to public was Austin Seven and Morris Mini Minor, it was soled for 496 pounds. Every model had an engine of 848 cc, and special breaks in the rear and in the front. The version DeLuxe had windows.
 

1960

Latter appear the "wagon series", Countryman, Traveller, Van and Pickup. It was also built a Mini for military use, but latter that version appear in public to sale, the Mini Moke.

1961

Sir alec Issigonis didn't think that the Mini was an elite car or a race car, by the hands of John Cooper is built the first Cooper, the 997 was released in September with an engine of 55 hp. The Cooper had a front brake of 7'' and a rear of 7'' to. The engine of the Cooper was a 848 cc.
 

1963

In March of 1963, it's released the Cooper S 1071 cc, with 70 hp. The production of the Cooper 997cc is finished in December.

1964

In January is released the 998cc Cooper, with 55hp, but with other engine. Other two cars were released in March : the 970 S and the 1275 Cooper S. The production of the Cooper 1071S was finished in August. The Cooper of 998 had an engine of one galon completly new and the 1275 S was the foward step for the Cooper S, he had 76hp that allowed to reach 100km/h in 11.2 seconds!The 970 S was a pure runner, built to run in the class of one galon. They built less than 1000 since 1964 to 1965. One of the greatest changes was the introduction in the car of the Hydrolastic Suspension.
 

1967

The Mini MkI was replaced by the MkII, that brougth a biggest rear window and rear light's bigger and square.

1968

The production of the Mini Moke is stopped. Latter it start's in other country's.

1969

With the release of the Mini ClubMan, the lastest MkII 1275 S and Cooper 989 was built. The new engine of 998cc, had only 30hp. In that time we could buy Minis with 850cc and 998cc, and the Mini Clubman was sold with engines of 850cc,998cc , 1098cc and 1275cc. The sales of the Mini reached the 2 milions of units!

1970

All the next Minis followed the Clubman and started to have new windows, and a new design. In March is launched the Cooper 1275 S MkIII, this model is very similar to the MKII.

1972

The gearbox is now on direct control. The Mini Clubman had new brakes of 8'', and the sales reach over 3 milions of units.

1981

The Mini Van, PickUp, Clubman, of 1275cc A serie and the engine of 1098cc were finished. In this year the engine A serie plus of the Metro, was initialized in the Mini. To 1981 till 1989 there wasn't any engine 1275cc built by the factory, except the Era Turbo in 1988.

1984

In May of this year, the we latest Mini's with felleo of 10'' had left the factory. It was the renaissance of the suspension
for 12'' of the Mini Clubman 1275 GT

1986

The engine of 850cc was finished

1988

Dies Sir Alec Issigonis, creator of the Mini.

1989

To celebrate the 30 years of the Mini, in a party in Silverstone is presented to public the special edition of Mini 30, also with the Era Mini Turbo.

1990

Although to have been thought as a special series limited the 1000
units the first Rover Mini Cooper left the lines of production with 63
horses also having an available Cooper S for order with 78cv. In this
year also had been manufactured the series Mini Racing Green, Mini
Flame Red, Mini Check Mate and Mini Studio 2.

1991

The first engine of injection constructed for the plant left in the
Rover Cooper 1.3i that it has beyond the new engine suplemental lights. The Mini is voted by the Autocar
magazine as the "Best car of all the times".

1993

The total production of Minis exceeds the 5.270.000 cars now.

1996

The last Mini 1275cc is presented to the press in day 1 of October.
The modifications included the radiator in the front of the engine
what it implied a new panel frontal, system injection multipoint of 2
points, projection style MGF with Airbag, doors strengthened with bars
of protection and belts with daily pay-tensors.The deliverer also was modified because of the new alternator. The New
Series has It the binary greater of always, but it is strangled by the
racio of the 2.71:1 differential

2000
