Exhaust Off My Mini
Next task was to remove the headers and the collector off the exhaust pipe, which was supposed to be easy. Although I was able to hammer out the headers off the collector (they are not welded but held together by clamps), a foot-long section of the pipe was practically "rust-welded" into the collector. Luckily, I was able to peel-away about an inch of the old collector off the pipe by using lots of penetrating oil, screwdriver, hammer, and a plier, which gave me a 2" overlap between the new collector and the pipe. I sawed off the rest of the collector.
New vs. Old Headers

Once I got the headers out, I looked at the crack near the weld and noticed that the crack had propagated for more than 2" (click on the image above for a close up). This explained the occasional smell of exhaust fumes while driving, even though I had sealed the interior pretty well. Finally, I was done taking things apart. Now, onto putting things back together so I can get the Mini running!
