In 1967, Shelby introduced the GT500 as a big block addition to the GT350. The car featured a police interceptor block based 428 with dual quad carburetors (two four barrel carbs). Midway through 1968, Shelby decided to introduce the GT500KR (King of the Road) to replace the 428 with the feared 428 CobraJet motor. It has been said that Chevrolet was going to designate the "KR" designation to one of their big block Camaros, but Shelby somehow found out, and upstaged them by introducing his own "KR" first. There were some 1967-68 GT500s with 427s - the engine used on Cobras and GT40s - which are very fast and very rare.
