My favorite circuit is the 555 oscillator. I also constantly
have problems with it ...

That little thing. Any way, I'm starting to get the hang
of it now. Mostly its used for flashing lights, driving a
speaker or transistor.
For the last year, when running it with a transistor it would
never work, but recently I've acquired some spare components.
Now I can actually light up a neon with just one wire. Click

Here is the circuit diagram. Pretty simple.
A bunch of resistors, a capacitor and the IC.
