Mrs. Ellen Vandervort

She wore her strawberry blonde hair up on top of her head and usually had a pencil sticking out of her bun. Her soft voice had a midwestern twang to it. She was a great teacher, enthusiastic about the subjects she taught and cared about her students as individuals. Mrs. Vandervort was a big influence in promoting my interest in English literature and in writing.

Mrs. Helen Arnold

The love of literature and writing that began with Mrs. Vandervort was further enriched by Mrs. Arnold. This quiet dignified lady taught all her English classes equally well and had high expectations for even her non-college prep classes. She was a favorite of many Chicano students because of this. She encouraged my writing and taught me the importance of grammar, but most of all she ingrained in me respect for other people's differences.
